Motion Analysis as a tool for studying laparoscopic dexterity
Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject SummaryProject Summary:
Most of the time surgery is the only therapy that reduces the risk of death and alleviates disabilities. With time, methods of surgery are improving and enhancing. Laparoscopy emerged mostly effective surgical method in past years. Laparoscopy enables the doctor to operate on patient by making minimum incisions in the abdominal region. This allows quick healing, less pain, and ease of quick recovery. Laparoscopy is a procedure that demands accuracy of the surgeons. There are various problems faced by surgeons during laparoscopic procedure that involve:
- Placement of camera in operational field
- Camera and tool balance
- Penetration of surgical tools inside the human body
- There is no feedback of performance during surgery
- Malpractice of surgeons
This led to the foundation of our work, to design a trainer that will help the surgeons to improve their performance. Unlike the Virtual Reality trainers that are available this trainer will provide a tactile feedback to the practitioner. The trainer involves the tasks that mimic the actual surgical procedures, the performance of these tasks will be evaluated and compared to check the improvement of the practitioner. The following parameters will be considered to evaluate the task:
- Deviation of instrument from the defined path length
- Time taken to perform a certain task
- Speed with which each task was performed
- Angular Path
- Distance Cut (a defined shape)
- Number of times assisting tools dropped
Aims and Objectives:
- To design and develop a system that can help surgeons train in specific task during laparoscopic surgery.
- Motion of instrument will be analyzed using motion tracking system.
- Performance evaluation of surgical task will be carried out.
Project Implementation Method:
The design and development of a trainer which involves tasks that mimic the actual surgical procedure, the performance of the tasks will be evaluated using opti-track system. Optitrack is a motion analysis system that will record the motion of instruments inside the operation field. Evaluations will be made on the basis of performance of each task.
Benefits of the ProjectBenefits of the project:
- The trainer will provide a tactile feedback to the practitioner.
- Enhancement of surgical skills and minimization of errors.
- Improvements in positioning of instruments during the actual surgical procedure.
A portable box model trainer that helps to record, evaluate and compare every single performance by the practitioner.
