Monitoring of Ferranti Effect and Power Factor Improvement in a Power System
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryThe effect in which the voltage at the receiving end of the transmission line is more than the sending voltage is known as the Ferranti effect. Capacitance and inductance are the main parameters of the lines having a length 240km or above. When this effect occurs in long transmission lines, shunt reactors compensate the capacitive VAR of the lines and therefore the voltage is regulated within the prescribed limits.
The PF is the ratio between the actual load power (KW) and the apparent load power (KVA) drawn via an electrical load. Poor power factor gives rise to many problems such as large kVA rating of the equipment. A necessary capacitance is connected so that PF is adjusted as close to unity as possible.Theoretically, capacitors could provide 100% of the needed KVAR, however, practically, correcting PF much nearer to unity.
Project Objectives- Less copper losses due to less load current
- Improvement in power factor
- Efficient power transfer from sending end to receiving end
We are making a prototype of a transmission line and monitor ferranti effect manually and then reduce ferranti effect and also improve power factor of the system. In this prototype we are using capacitor bank and inductor bank. We will use a LCD to display voltage and current parameters to monitor ferranti effect before and after.
Benefits of the Project- It will be used to reduce power factor penalties, reduce power system losses and increased load carrying capabilities in existing systems.
- There are also huge environmental benefits associated with power correction.
- It will also improve the reliability of the system.
A prototype will be rpoduced for the monitoring of ferranti effect and PF. A manual improvement will be made to reduce ferranti effect and improve power factor. The project will used in lab for experiement performence lately. It will help students to better understand both ferranti effect and power factor improvement.
