Mobility Assistive Device for Paralyzed Patients
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryThe patient with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or any sort of paralysis disease are unable to communicate their needs and donot have the ability to explain what they exactly want. Even they are unable to call their relatives, attendants or doctor in an emergency situation. More the environment (Bed room, wash room etc.) should be automated to facilitate such patients. So we are proposing a system which will let them to communicate with others without being dependent on anything.
The “MOBILITY ASSISTIVE DEVICE FOR PARALYZED PATIENTS” is a system which focuses on developing a low cost intelligent tracking system based on tracking the eyes movement as well as behavior of user through AI. The user can access the system through laptop or any computing device. This project is be based on the harnessing the brain signals of the paralyzed person.
Project ObjectivesOur main objective is to facilitate the patients having ALS or any sort of paralysis dieses in which the patient is unable to move his entire body but his brain and eyes, with comfort in which they can able to communication and will be a little self-dependence. Our system provides an automated environment and facilitate locked-in syndrome patients to control the home-appliances on their own. Our main purpose is to provide ability to the ones who are only able to move their eyes and head that they can be able to communicate with others and let others knows their need and what exactly they want.
Project Implementation MethodIn this project we are concern with both hardware and software. We are developing a web – application that will help paralyzed patient in communication as well as hardware that will allow the patient to handle the home allowances.
The devices will locate the mind waves of the paralyzed patient that will transfers those signals to the hardware of our project and then it allows the patient to use the home appliances or the web – application according to the given instructions (code) to the system.
SOFTWARE FIGURE 1:

Fig 1: Software Working Mechanism
In (FIGURE 1) the sensor will detect the mind-waves, converts the mind-waves into signals and transfer the signals to the webcam that allows the user to use the keyboard by the movement of their eyes. In a single blink the cursor will click which convert the text into speech and that speech will be written or listened in any electronic device such as Mobility Devices.

HARDWARE FIGURE 2:
Fig 2: Hardware Working Mechanism
In (FIGURE 2) the sensor will detect the mind-waves, converts the mind-waves into signals and transfer the signals to the controller by which the user would be able to use any electronic devices such as Home Appliances.
Methodology
This project consists of EEG (Electroencephalogram) sensor which detects brain electrical signals and it connects over Wi-Fi with Raspberry Pi and it controls the (light, fan, or any equipment) which is attached with it. The system is also designed to track the user’s head/eye movement on windows form application through web camera which is directly connected with Arduino UNO. The system also uses machine learning algorithms to learn the behavior of the patient and can predict what it may intended to do.
Benefits of the ProjectIThe proposed project would be beneficial for the patients having Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). We are providing a better solution which help them to communicate with others and they can help the patient to communicate his needs without being dependent.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe basic architecture of the system is designed in such a way that it lies on the user’s brain waves. The whole system is designed in a manner that it can easily be utilized by harnessing the brain signals of the patient so that the patient having ALS can easily perform any task on their desire. EEG sensor will be used in this project which is a senor design to harness the brain signals and work accordingly.
Use of a particular type of product:
We are using webcam in our project. We are applying computer vision processing in our webcam in which webcam will connect the eye of the user to the cursor of the system and will track the eyes of the user such as movement of eyes will be parallel to the movement of cursor and click function performs by blinking the eyes.
Data Management:
The important data for the system is the information of the patient and the sensor given to the particular patient as well as the behavior of the patient that will also be stored in the database. This would be managed in database.
Reuse of existing software components to implement various parts/features of the system:
We have built the interface of the project which is a desktop application by the idea of OptiKey Keyboard. We have built the desktop application by using Visual Studio (2015).
