Project Summary

According to this spam of time where everyone is bringing drastic changes in Human life. Experts are trying to discover easy ways to do things. Human power is being saved by replacing it by robots in different fields. Cleaning public places is also in such fields where more human power is needed. So, we are introducing a sensor base movable device called “Mini Garbage Collector” that turns around and detect the rubbish/trash through their sensors, collect it through their mechanical arm and throws the trash/rubbish into the garbage container.

The main motive of “Mini Garbage collector (MGC)” is to pick up trash/ rubbish using mechanical arm. The picked up trash/rubbish is throws into the container, the container’s cap will open only when the hand are come closer to it. The trash/rubbish is separated (metallic and non-metallic) and thrown into the garbage container that is attached to the device which has split into two partitions, for metallic and non-metallic trash/rubbish. If the container get filled it will notify to us through an alerting message that “the garbage container is filled” through the application. MGC perform several tasks such as movement, object detection and discrimination, obstacle avoidance and path planning.

The major issues faces by many growing countries especially, in Pakistan is absent of uncollected trash/rubbish from the streets, roads, sidewalk, stations and other public places. A “Mini Garbage Collector (MGC)” is a device that senses the trash/rubbish and collects it through their hand picker. While throwing trash/rubbish into the container, the container’s cap will sense the hand that come close to it and open their cap automatically.

The “Mini Garbage Collector (MGC)” is operated by using mobile phones. There are two modes (Manual and Autonomous) to operate the MGC device.

In a manual mode the device turns around and the trash/rubbish picked up is operated by using android application. The trash/rubbish is picked up by using hand-picker that is controlled by servo motors and the movement of servo motors is controlled by mobile phone through Arduino UNO chips into which they are programmed.

The collected trash/rubbish is shifted to a garbage container. The garbage container has segregate partitions for metallic and non-metallic trash/rubbish. Another servo motor is connected to the garbage container that will rotate the container to collect the waste.

In Autonomous mode, the device moves and waste pick up is done without human involvement. The MGC device is placed at the center of the workspace, and then it follows a coverage path planning algorithm. The obstacle detection is made possible by using ultrasonic sensors

Project Implementation Method

“Mini Garbage Collector (MGC)” is generally a collection of many different parts that work together to address the problem. Our Device is capable to work on the following problems that are addressed. The main components of our device are as follows:

  •  Arduino Board:

This board control all functionalities of the device into which it programmed.

  •  Servo motors

Servo motors are used to control the rotation of robotic arm and movement of the device.

  • 1.5.3 Ultrasonic Sensors

It detect the obstacle and trashes.

  • 1.5.4 Metal Proximity Sensor

It is used to check whether the trash picked up is a metal or nonmetal.

  • 1.5.5 WIFI Module

It used to provide Wi-Fi and internet facilities to the microcontroller.

  • 1.5.6 Battery

The battery is capable to deliver the voltage in the device.
