Project Title

Mimicking motion of lower limb using gait analysis on test track

Project Area of Specialization Mechatronics EngineeringProject Summary

Gait analysis based on video cameras and the instrumented treadmill is an inexpensive, convenient, and efficient manner of providing useful information for multiple health-related applications. As a clinical tool applied in the rehabilitation and diagnosis of medical conditions and sports activities, gait analysis shows great prospects. The gait analysis method is divided into two parts: gait kinematics and gait kinetics. For kinematics analysis, passive markers and digital cameras are used to collect data, and the MATLAB software is used to analyze data and represent the results. For kinetics analysis, the force plate data is used to obtain ground reaction forces and moments of the subject using the MATLAB software. With the development of sensor technology and the analysis method, gait analysis is expected to play an increasingly important role in clinical applications.

Project Objectives Project Implementation Method

Our project proposes a low-cost gait analysis system using 2D cameras, a general computer, and passive markers. Instead of using a restricted walkway, we are using an instrumented treadmill equipped with force plates to provide a better alternative to capture unlimited gait cycles in a small space. Moreover, the use of treadmill provides close to natural feet strike can be achieved, without chances of partial steps or missteps, as happens in the force platforms embedded in a walkway. The coordinates of the markers were obtained by capturing digital images and then processing them using image processing algorithms on MATLAB software. Kinematic parameters consist of temporal parameters, spatial parameters, and joint angles are obtained using the MATLAB software.  The kinematic study of gait parameters is done by comparing the measured parameter range with the available range of normal walking patterns. For kinetic analysis, the ground reaction forces (GRF) and moments for force plate data are obtained using the MATLAB software. All the graphical representations of the results of the analysis are done by using the MATLAB software packages.

Benefits of the Project

Gait analysis is used to assess and treat individuals with conditions affecting their ability to walk. It is also commonly used in sports biomechanics to help athletes run more efficiently and to identify posture-related or movement-related problems in people with injuries. It helps the physical therapist identify the driver or true source of the pain. It is also an important clinical tool for the rehabilitation process. Presently gait analysis is done in a sophisticated lab environment comprised of high-resolution 3D video cameras placed around the walkway having a force plate. Although it provides accurate data, the use of high-cost cameras and active markers makes it expensive. We provide a cost-effective solution.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final product of the project is a complete gait analysis machine ready to use for clinical trials. It consists of an instrumented treadmill, passive markers sets, digital cameras, and a general-purpose computer. To start gait analysis, markers are applied at anatomical positions of the subject and requested to walk on the treadmill. The markers sets, digital cameras, and treadmill sensors are connected to the computer to collect the data. The developed MATLAB algorithms represent the results of the analysis. These results are used to improve the gait of the subject.
