Project Summary

To read multiple 2D barcodes on medicine boxes, an expensive high-resolution and large field of view
(FoV) camera is required with high computation requirements. The proposed solution would use an
inexpensive camera and a mechanical XY traversing system to reading multiple barcodes intermittently.
Since only one barcode will be in the FOV of camera, it would take less computation power to read and
decode the barcode. Step by step, the XY traversing system would move the camera to next box in a
pattern shown below in figure 1A.
 

Project Objectives

To Design a low cost multiple barcode reading and decoding system for GS1 Serialization, Tracking and Tracing applications for pharmaceuticals.

Project Implementation Method

The proposed solution will be designed around a low cost HD USB camera fitted on to a XY traversing
mechanism with will move the camera in both X and Y axis incrementally. The traversing mechanism will
be based on Stepper motors along with a microcontroller based controller. The system will be interfaced
with a PC which would be running the Barcode decoding software.
