Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryLicense Plate Recognition system is a realtime embedded system which automatically recognizes the license plate of vehicles using OCR and Image processing techniques on Raspberry Pi 3. There are many applications ranging from complex security systems to common areas and from parking . Most of the ALPR systems are built using tools like Matlab. We use alternate method of implementing ALPR systems using free software including Python and the Open Computer Vision Library.
The processed vehicle license plates are stored in a database and can be verified against a number of user defined criteria and Integrates seamlessly with physical access control device like boom barriers or sliding gates.

For the realization of this work a series of tools and materials were used.

1. Raspberry pi 3

3. Boom Barrier operated be Servo/DC motor
Techniques:
1.Capturing of image using high resolution Camera
2. For image processing; modification and read of images Tesseract OCR technique andOpen CV (Computer Vision) library is used
OCR (Optical Character Recognition)is an open source software for character recognition that uses machine learning algorithms
3. Linux operating system for Raspberry Pi.
4. Interfacing of barrier with the system
1. Gives a 24*7, faster and reliable alternative to manual registering of license plates
2. No stoppages leading to faster through out even during peak hours from Barriers
3. Faster, efficient and comprehensive data capturing and verification of the vehicles
Technical Details of Final DeliverableLicense Plate Recognition system which automatically captures the image of the number plate of a vehicle and the details were verified using Raspberry Pi processor for authentication. The system also alerts the authorities when any unauthorized image of number plate was detected using buzzer alarm system. When the authorized vehicle was detected then the system operates the gate using DC motor.
