Laproscopic Simulator Evaluator
Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject SummaryTraditionally surgical trainings are being done in the operating room which increases the risks for the patient life and surgeons get their hands perfect after years of practices and sacrifices. The most important aspect of laparoscopic surgery is surgical training where the trainees get hand on minimal invasive surgeries to develop and polish their skills without any harm to human life and achieving best results with limited opportunities. To overcome these difficulties "LEARNING BY DOING” basic laparoscopic simulator is designed works as an innovative trainer box to evaluate the trainees which summarizes their performance after completion of each exercise and provide feedback as by mean of scores.
The reasons that compelled us to design laparoscopic simulator is human safety and affordability for medical teaching institutes because safe realistic training and unbiased quantitative assessment of technical skills are required for laparoscopy. The design of the project is based on basic real life abdominal diseases mentioned: cholecystectomy, splenectomy and appendectomy etc.. Laparoscopic simulator is being designed by exploiting various sensors interfaced by hardware components to software through raspberrypi and/or ardiuno MEGA using webGL.
Project ObjectivesThe goal of the project is to design a laparoscopic simulator evaluator to carry out minimally invasive surgeries(MIS) on a self designed 3D environment using joysticks (scissors and forceps) for the practice and evaluation of surgeons.
Project Implementation Method- SCISSOR
ULTRASONIC SENSOR: That read the back and forth movement of the scissor.
IMU SENSOR:That reads the angular movement of the scissor.
- FORCEP
ULTRASONIC SENSOR: That read the forward and backward movement of the forcep or grasper.
IMU SENSOR:That reads the angular movement of the forcep.
- CUTTING AND COAGULATION:
For the process of cutting and coagulation we use toggle switch.
- MICROCONTROLLER:
it is a control device that incorporates microprocessor. The data from all the sensors is fed to microcontroller which process the data.
- SYSTEM:
In system we have graphically designed window according to the scenario for the surgical procedure using WebGl.
using webGL allows:
graphic designing.
interfacing of hardware and software.
evaluation of trainee.

- 3D created environment gives to real life surgery scenerio and is very beneficial for the surgeons to prepare and evaluate themselves.
- Less Costly and easy to use and train practitioners
- Preparing for worst.
- There will always be a subjective component to the determination of surgeon’s readiness, which will imply judging abilities such as reaction time, mentality, patient care and handling of stress
- Hardware component:
- Arduino mega: Arduino is used for creating electronics projects. It consists of both a physical programmable circuit board . The Arduino Mega is based on the ATmega2560, it is compatible with most shields designed for the Arduino.
- IMU Sensor: it is an electronic device that measures and reports a body's specific force, angular rate, and sometimes the orientation of the body, using a combination of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and sometimes magnetometers.
- Ultrasonic sensor: it measures distances based on transmitting and receiving ultrasonic signals.
- Potentiometer: it is a variable resistor used to adjust voltages for cutting features.
- Toggle switch: it is a electromechanical switch which can be lever or push button type used as an actuator.
- Raspberry pi: The Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer which has the ability to interact with the sensors.
- Joy stick casing:
- Scissos and forceps: use to give feeling of cutting and grasping to user.
- LCD: used as a display.
- Software component:
- WEBGL: WebGL is a JavaScript API for rendering interactive 2D and 3D graphics within any compatible web browser without the use of plug-ins.
- Arduino IDE: it is a cross-platform application that is written in functions from C and C++. It is used to write and upload programs to Arduino compatible boards.
