As per internet sources, almost 25% of Pakistan population is above 55 years old. This fraction is even larger in the developed countries. These old age people are unable to move around normally due to health deterioration and require assistance to support their movements.

In this project we propose to develop a gadget that will empower the limbs of such elderly people and enable them to move normally without assistance.

The gadget will consist of a wearable hinged brace. Just like the power-steering of a car, it will apply mechanical power to aid the required movement of the limb.

Moreover, in a different mode, the gadget will also be used by the health professionals like physiotherapists to give a pre-programmed set of exercises to various limbs of a patient. The amplitude, intensity, and duration of these exercises will be configurable.

Yet in another high power mode the same gadget will be utilized by the industrial laborers as a wearable robot. It could help them uplift many times bigger loads compared to the load they would have lift without it.

If successful, the gadget so developed will become a product with a significant demand. Hence it is not beyond a reasonable thinking to convert it into an industry offering not only employment to the people but also having a potential of export. Hence contributing in the socio-economic growth of the country.

Project Objectives

Apart from the core objective of securing a decent grade in our FYP, following are the objectives of this project:

1. To develop a product that is really useable and addresses an open need.

2. To develop a product that helps the humanity.

3. To develop a product that potientially be converted into an industry hence contributing in the socio-econimic growth.

Project Implementation Method

For this project we will use the Agile methodology, which is a practice that promotes continuous iteration of development and testing throughout the lifecycle of the project. Both development and testing activities are concurrent unlike the Waterfall model. The agile software development emphasizes on four core values.

  1. Prefer team interactions over processes and tools
  2. Prefer having a working prototype over comprehensive documentation
  3. Prefer customer(end-user) collaboration over contract negotiation
  4. Responding to change over following a plan
Benefits of the Project

The benefits obtained from this project could be perceived as two folds:

Primarily, the gadget developed in this project has three applications:

    1. Empowering aged weak people to move normally without assistance.

    2. Empowering industrial labourers to be more productive.

    3. Helping health professionals to apply varios pre-programmed set of phisiotherapy excercises to their subjects.

Secondarily, the gadget so developed will be a product with a significant demand. Hence it is not beyond a reasonable thinking to convert it into an industry offering employment to the people. Hence contributing in the socio-economic grouth of the country.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The Final deliverable will comprise a hinged knee/arm brace powered by a pneumatic pressure and controlled by an application software that will allow the usage of the gadget in several modes including but notlimed to the following:

1- Empower: enabling weak elders to move normally.

2- Phisiotherapy: enabling a health professional to apply pre-programmed set of exercises on the subject.
