IoT Enabled Lane-less Traffic Monitoring Using Multiple Inductive Loop Detection Technology
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryThe purpose of this Final Year Departmental Project is to design and implement an IoT based automobile detector for heterogeneous and lane less traffic, utilizing inductive loop vehicle detection technology. An Inductive loop sensor is an object detection system that uses inductive loop detection technology to correctly detect and identify large ferrous objects passing over it, such as automobiles (bicycle, motorbike, bus, truck, car etc.).
The design scheme does not only identifies passing vehicles but can also profile them with respect to their make. Furthermore, the obtained data from the sensor can be further analyzed to obtain a wide variety of results pertaining to traffic monitoring such as vehicle count, traffic flow speed, and mean traffic velocity, etc.
Project ObjectivesTo design and implement an IoT based multiple inductive loop vehicle detection system that can detect, identify and profile vehicles with respect to their make in a heterogeneous and lane-less traffic environment.
Project Implementation MethodLoops Installation:-
All permanent loop installations should be installed in the roadway by cutting slots with a masonry cutting disc or similar devise. A 45° crosscut should be made across the loop corners to reduce the chance of damage that can be caused to the loop at right angle corners.
After burying loop under the road, the loops are sealed using "quick-set" black epoxy compound or hot bitumen mastic or silicon to blend with the roadway surface.
For prototype, the loops can be put on road after necessary required protection of wires, vehicles can be passed over it for experimental tests.
Detector Installation:-
The detecror must be installed in a convenient weatherproof location as close as possible to the loop via feeder cable. Our Detector will be enclosed
Benefits of the ProjectNowadays, traffic monitoring system is based on cameras which is more costly than loop hence, using loops base system is better choice comparatively.
Also, the vehicle segregation is difficult task. In fact, it is impossible to segregate vehicles manually so there is need of such a system which can segregate vehicles automatically.
There is no such system developed in Pakistan which can detect and monitor lane-less traffic, and in Pakistan the traffic system is very poor. There is no proper traffic management system. So, the need of such product which can detect and segregate vehicle type in the lane and lane-less traffic system is very important.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableWe are designing a prototype for final submission. The prototype will be comprised of the coil (inductive loops made up of 16AWG wire) and a detector.
The output of the prototype will be based on multiple test results and will be improved. The final and improved results will be recorded on a database using ESP32, also the data will be displayed on a server, which could be used by traffic police for betterment of the traffic or for just monitoring purposes. This system will enable intelligent traffic monitoring in countries with heterogeneous and lane-less traffic, resulting in better traffic management.
The inductive loop will be enclosed in a PVC pipe so that it can be protected from getting damage by vehicle tires during testing. The detector will also be enclosed in a plastic box. This complete hardware will be implemented on road, it will detect vehicles properly irrespective of the traffic system whether it is homogenous or heterogeneous.
