Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummarySmart waste management system is specifically designed to overcome all possible issue related to waste management which involves collection, transportation, and classification. For classification, waste items will be stored in our waste bins. On filling, the collected waste will be transported to dumping place. With the assistance of Internet of Things (IoT), hybrid computing, artificial intelligence, and deep learning architecture, we will classify the collected waste from the dumped area into four distinguish categories such as plastic, metal, glass and unknown. Finally, the classified waste item will be placed in the designated bin, respectively.
Project Objectives- To propose a waste classification model (WCM) which is used to classify different waste items like plastic, metal, glass etc.
- To design a grid segmentation mechanism for WCM.
- To deploy and design hardware design of waste classification model in real time.
- We will use hybrid computing approach to decrease overall latency and improve energy utilization.

The poisonous gases emit from the waste dump yard cause a terrible effect on the human health. To make a clean and green environment, we need a smart waste management and classification system for the well-being of human lives. In order to tackle the above highlighted issue, we propose a smart waste classification architecture that will consist of smart bins which notify the bin status in real-time with the help of wireless communication. On filling, a message will be generated to collect waste on mobile/web application which ultimately dump the collected waste in the yard. The camera mounted on the raspberry pie will capture the waste dump image to categorize and classify the waste item. Moreover, the gripper whose movement will be controlled by Arduino will pick the particular waste item and place it in the designated bin.
Benefits of the ProjectAs the impact of our project is mainly on environment and social life. Therefore, every group of the society will be benefited by our project. The government, waste companies, transport companies, people and society management will be benefitted by our project. Some benefits of our project are:
- It will help the waste management companies to perform the waste collection task with much ease.
- The transportation and disposal of waste will be simplified.
- As the population is moving from countryside areas to urban areas, having a smart waste management system is crucial for providing good environment to dwellers.
- As nearly 75% of the total domestic waste is recyclable, this project will help recycling the waste because the recycling process can only be done on classified waste.
- The cost previously being spent on waste collection, transportation and classification will be drastically reduced with this project.
- As one of the biggest problems of the world especially of the developing countries is pollution and waste, this project provides an effective solution to overcome these problems.
- As waste items contains plastic majorly which cannot be burned (because it contains hazardous gases) or dumped in the ground. Therefore, its classification and reuse are utterly important.
- Having an effective waste classification system will have positive impacts on the economy of the country.
- Clean environment attracts more people for settlement and investment which intern is beneficial for government.

As we are developing a complete smart waste management system, the final deliverable of our project will be a complete system performing all tasks related to collection, transportation, and classification. Some of the deliverables of our project are:
- The first deliverable is waste collection. It will consist of smart waste bins, each includes Wi-Fi sensor, weight sensor, ultrasonic sensor, Arduino chip. This will measure the waste level in bin and notify on the mobile/web application.
- The second deliverable is to make segments of the waste dump area using raspberry pi (edge node). This segmentation and robotic arm control unit mechanism comprise of Arduino chip, motor, relay, raspberry pi, camera, gripper with servo motors, rod with shred to design a waste classification model. Moreover, all these components will work as a combined system which will perform waste classification using both edge and cloud processing.
- The third deliverable is to classify the waste item into four categories such as plastic, metal, glass and unknown.
- The fourth deliverable is to place the waste item into the respective bin.
