Project Title

IOT Based Smart Walking Stick with Image Processing

Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject Summary

We are making a Smart Walking Stick with the help of technology to assist visually impaired people..

There are several numbers of people around us which are visually impaired, and among them millions of people are blind, performing daily activities is a difficult task since vision plays a central role in almost every activity of humans. Smart Walking Stick helps the blind people in moving and allowing them to perform their work comfortably.

For this purpose, we are building a fully embedded system Walking stick with the help of Computer Vision to recognize obstacles coming in the way of blind people.

In this project we would be using Microcontrollers, Image Processors, GPS+GSM module kit along with various sensors, vibrating motor, buzzer and LCDs...

All these equipments would be implemented on the wooden or plastic stick with a push button for emergency situations.

By Clicking on the blind person would be able to send a text message along with the coordinates to determine the exact location to the pre-saved contacts.

Hence the relatives would know the location and trace him/her..

Project Objectives

To design a Smart walking cane with the help of the Internet of Things (IoT) for visually impaired people. The report reveals that globally 43 million people are living with blindness and 295 million people living with moderate-to-severe visual impairment. The Smart Walking Stick for the blind is an embedded system that is to be implemented to reduce the complexities of blind people. With this system, blind people will be able to move from one place to another place without help from others. Due to these features, it is the best equipment for blind and visually impaired people for walking on the road. Hence the system can solve the problems faced by the blind in their daily life.

Project Implementation Method

This is a Raspberry Pi and PIC-based intelligent walking stick that is integrated with obstacle detective sensors, a location information receiving module, and Android-based applications that are used to get the location information of the user as well as being helpful in emergency situations.

Ultrasonic sensors, a water sensor, a GPS module, Raspberry Pi, a PIC18F4525 microcontroller, a vibration motor, and a buzzer would be all fixed to the walking stick. A three-layer structure will be designed, where controllers, the GPS module, the buzzer, and the power bank are placed,

The water sensor is placed at the bottom of the stick. One ultrasonic sensor is placed at a height of 17 cm and another is at a height of 92 cm from the bottom. The vibration motor is placed near the handgrip of the stick.

The system execution process is divided into two parts. One is the obstacle detection part, and the other is for receiving location information. When the power supply is given to Raspberry Pi, the whole system is initialized and starts working.

Benefits of the Project

The smart walking stick, constructed with at

most accuracy, will help the blind people to move from one place to another without others help. This could also be considered a crude way of giving the blind a sense of vision. This stick reduces the dependency of visually impaired people on other family Members, friends and guide dogs while walking around. The proposed combination of various working units makes a real-time system that monitors position of the user and Provides dual feedback making navigation more safe and secure. The smart stick detects objects or obstacles in front of users and feeds warning back, in the form of voice messages rather than vibration. Also the incorporation of automatic room equipment switching in the stick will be useful while they are indoor.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In the final deliverable, we would have a stick with bunch of sensors, camera,  emergency push button, LED, speaker and GPS+GSM Module. It'll be in complete hardware form assisting with an app to send emergency text to pre-saved contact in case of emergency contact. Our project will definitely make an impact on visually impaired persons lives. And in future it can be more enhanced and implemented with different techniques to make lives more comforting.
