Smart Shopping System:

Now-a-days, where technology is advancing at a great pace and almost every industry is involving into intelligent systems for a real time and quick processing to reduce the human labor and minimizing the human error by implementing new technology and IoT at their departments, numerous departments in our country still lack in this new technology.

After analyzing the different fields, we went for the one which has the most interactive impact with the public, i.e. Markets or Shopping centers.

Shopping marts in our country are still using the conventional system of using barcode scanners for the billing process, which can be really time consuming, resulting in the long ques and stock management delays. Thus creating an unpleasant environment for both costumers and management teams. So,

A simple and efficient shopping system is being proposed to manage the shopping details for a costumer and saving the time by generating the e-bill, as the product is being put in the shopping cart, instead of getting in long ques at the billing counters. Meanwhile controlling the real time stock management as well in the database at the shopping malls.

Project Objectives

Objectives and Goals:

The key features and goals of this whole project are as follows:

  • Time Saving: minimize the time wastage by eliminating the long ques at the billing counters.
  • Effective In-Hand Management (for costumers): provide the costumer an efficient and effective control over his shopping details and management.
  • Real Time Stock Management: a quick update in the stock quantity at the server database, as soon the any costumer adds a product in the smart cart, providing a real time stock management
  • Security and Errors: reduce the human errors like double scanning of a single product and providing effective security checks.

Project Implementation Method

To achieve the goals mentioned above,

  • The ordinary trolley for carrying the goods will be replaced with smart Trolley, installed with unique RFID Tag (purpose written in the last paragraph of this section) and RFID & Barcode scanners to scan the product that a customer wants to buy and add to his cart and shopping list. An interactive touch screen panel will be installed on the trolley. Where the customer will be able to see the list of purchased item, remove any particular item from the list and see the price of a particular product on the screen, etc., allowing him to manage his purchases effectively and efficiently. A weight sensor with a buzzer will also be installed in the trolley as an anti-theft device to ensure the security. All of these components will be connected to a controller installed on the Trolley.
  • These smart trollies will interact with the main server in real time, via wireless system, as the customer will be adding the items to the cart, thus, performing real time stock management.
  • A security check barrier at the exit point will be installed, where the customer will just pay the amount that will already be displayed on the screen installed on the trolley and the barrier will allow the way so the customer will be able to check out.
  • A large Led Matrix Display and RFID reader (for that unique RFID Tag on the trolley), which will also be connected to the server, will be installed on each exit point the led matrix will display the total amount to be paid or any other message for the costumer when the trolley approaches the exit terminal and the RFID Tag will be detected, ensuring the security once again while checking out.

Benefits of the Project

Although this project have a numerous benefits like, Technical, Non-technical along with Econimic and Financial growth. But a few are discussed here as:

  • Ease of customer is the basic necessity; less time is consumed, more digitalization incomes more precision, healthier the advancement.
  • Effective time management is introduced and customers are attracted towards the new implemented technology as it facilitates in saving their precious time.
  • Man power is reduced, thus increasing the reliability of the system.
  • Considering the customer end, it helps with quick decision making as the customer is provided with real-time management.
  • Real-time stock management is also a feature of this project. As soon as one product is purchased by the customer, the server updates stock list thus keeping a record of sales and purchases at every moment.
  • Use of smart trolley increases the security system of the store; human errors are eliminated at costumer as well as the provider’s end.
  • Anti-theft technology is introduced; using weight sensors in Trolley and barriers at exit terminal.
  • Implementation of new technology may provide new horizons of research to freshmen and newer and smarter systems may be presented in the market in coming future.
  • Considering human psychology and server precision, customer will be attracted towards new technology.
  • Less human labor is required.
  • No long queues, no hustle and bustle, thus create a healthy, friendly and interactive environment, creating a positive impact on the society.
  • Rush hours can be managed more effectively, providing digitalized computing instead of manual.
  • Launch of new technology in different departments proves developing image in the market.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The project Smart Shopping System has the following major constituents:

Smart Cart:

The Trolley will be installed with the following components:

  • An RFID Reader (for 128k Hz) to detect the items with RFID Tags (working on 5V)
  • An RFID Tag.
  • A Barcode Reader to scan the items with barcodes only. (working on 5-12V)
  • Weight Sensor (HX711), for security purpose (working on 5V)
  • A 7” Capacitive Touch Display (Working on 5-12V)
  • A controller for all the components above (Working on 19V)
  • Two 12V DC Compact Rechargeable Batteries connected in series to give 24V

Server:

A mini PC working on 19V will be installed where all the databases will be stored and will interact with smart carts wirelessly with WIFI Routers, Zigbee/ESP Modules.

Exit Terminal:

Installed with:

  • A Barrier, operated by a stepper motor(1.8A) using a stepper motor driver and a microcontroller
  • RFID Reader to scan the Trolley data (5V)
  • Large LED Matrix Display, working with a micro-controller. (12V)
  • A small Thermal Printer to print the bills. (7.1V)
