IOT BASED SMART IRRIGATION SYSTEM

Project Area of Specialization

Electrical/Electronic Engineering

Project Summary

To serve the humanity nowadays, technology is playing a wonderful role and a man’s basic and primary need is food indeed. It can be said that about more than 85% of people of Pakistan are directly, indirectly depended on agriculture. Proper irrigation by water pump cannot be maintained due to frequent power outages, unavailability of grid lines in remote areas and scarcity/cost of fuel to run pumps. To make the sustainable irrigation system and field monitoring system for getting better crops growth as well as best production, this IOT based Automatic irrigation system is proposed. In this system IOT and Arduino cloud are used to control and monitor the irrigation system. IOT is used to obtain stored data monitoring and real time monitoring of various contents of soil. Arduino cloud and an integrated app is used to make a fully wireless system to make a user-friendly system to cultivate and irrigate water properly to the field. Different kinds of sensors are used. This report presents a fully automated drip irrigation system which is controlled and monitored by using “Arduino IOT Cloud Server”. Temperature and the humidity content of the soil are frequently monitored. The system informs user about any abnormal conditions like less moisture content and temperature rise, even concentration of water by sending notifications through the wireless module.

Project Objectives

The objective of this system is to detect the moisture content of the soil and depending on it sprinkle water . This entire information will be sent to the user's mobile phone. Keywords: Soil moisture sensors, IOT, Arduino, Android, Microcontroller.Traditional watering methods can waste as much as 50% of the water used due to inefficiencies in irrigation, evaporation  and  overwatering.  Smart  irrigation  systems  use sensors for real-time or historical data to inform watering routines and modify watering schedules to improve efficiency. It reduces human efforts

Project Implementation Method

In the proposed irrigation system IoT (The Internet of Things) plays a major role. The purpose of
the IoT in this system is, it has to share the data to the users. Thus the IoT server is connected with
the Wi-Fi module. The information of the soil is transmitted to the Wi-Fi network through the
signal conditioning circuit of the various sensors. The IoT technoartista is the open source IoT
server through which the signal is shared to the user.
The physical information of the soil such as soil moisture, humidity, temperature are send to
the Wi-Fi, then it is shared to the user using IoT. The height of the crops and information of
chlorophyll of the plant is also shared to the user personal computer with internet connection or
smart phone. If the moisture content of the soil is lesser than the reference value then the command
from the user device is transmitted to the field section through IoT server then the irrigation system
is activated and the water is supplied to the field. Whenever it reaches the span value if moisture
content of the soil then the irrigation system is deactivated, that information is also transmitted to
the user. This is the chain process of this particular proposed irrigation system.

Benefits of the Project

Traditional irrigation strategies are not suitable for dealing with the shortage of irrigation water, this sector must benefit from modern technological advances. Hence the new smart agricultural irrigation system has following advantages.
Increase the productivity: Productivity on farmland is going too increased.
Reduce water consumption.
No manpower required.
Reduce soil erosion and nutrient leaching.
Cost effective method.
High quality crop production.
System not damage by weathers and birds.
Efficient use of water.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A working project and a running system is a combination of a lot of different components working together. We see that all the components like controllers, sensors, output devices and connectors have their own importance and those all work independently in a circuit. Combining all of those components and magic will happen, we will get a proper working project. In this project, we have used capacitive soil moisture sensors, to sense the moisture of soil, and temperature sensor to sense the temperature around the crop. As all of those parameters effect the yield of the crop.
Using those simple yet powerful idea of monitoring a plant with ever so simple, cheap and affordable technology support the farmer as well as environment and make a positive impact on all of those who are associated with agriculture
