Banana Fiber Extraction Machine
Natural fibers have got a wide application in green materials manufacturing. Research is being carried out to use banana fiber as reinforcement in composites. Banana fibers are extracted manually, and the process is time consuming. This project aims to design and fabricate banana fiber extraction machine. Existing machines produces fibers with impurities and that they can not be used for mass production. The prototype model will be capable of producing long good quality fibers with increased production rate.
The machine working principle is that banana pseudo stem will be fed into machine through feeding rollers. The stem will be pulped by pulping roller which will squeeze the stem. A tissue scrubbing bar will separate pulp from fibers. The machine will be powered by a 2 hp motor. Important parts used are structural frame, pulping roller, feeding rollers, tissue scrubbing bar, pulleys, motor, and open belt drive.
Project aims to produce a prototype of banana fiber extraction machine with following key objectives;
All possibly available research work done on banana fiber extraction machine will be studied to get a concept of working mechanism of machine. Components of machines will be separately designed and a CAD model will be developed. The designed components will be simulated in design software for checking structural and vibrational stability of the components. Cost of fabrication will be evaluated and each component will be fabricated in workshop and will be assembled to produce a prototype. At the end, key parameters such as fiber length, extraction time etc will be determined through test run. Hence the implementation strategy would be;
1. Literature review
2. Component Design and 3D model of parts
3. Structural and vibrational analysis
4. Fabrication of parts and assembling them.
5. Test Run
The project benefits would be;
1. This will enable farmers to extract fibers from waste pseudo stem.
2. Waste stem would be utilized for extracting fibers and there will be no need for burning those stems.
3. Farmers could sell these fibers to manufactures and researchers to earn some extra cash hence their lifestyle can be improved.
4. Small and medium enterpises could be established to manufacture banana related products once fibers are extracted.
5. SME's will eventually boost economic growth and will help to reduce poverty.
6. It will self employ farmers.
7. This machine can be used for research work as well. Fiber obtained from this machine can be used for further research on banana fiber applications and uses.
The final deliverable will be an automated banana fiber extraction machine. The banana pseudo stem will be fed through feeding rollers. The pulping roller powered by motor will pulp the stem. Tissue scrubbing bar will separate pulp from fibers. Open belt drive will be used to drive the pulping drum.
The quality of obtained fiber depends upon clearance between rollers, rotor speed, and feeding angle.
