IOT Based Smart City Parking System
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryParking is fundamental to sustainable urban development. The waste of visitor time congestion and increased carbon emission, lost productivity and economic opportunities are some of the problems faced due to inefficient parking system. Parking Facilities and traffic management system are one of the key aspects of smart city. Now a days finding a parking space in crowded area is always difficult. Traffic congestion can be solved if the driver can be informed in advance about the availability of parking lots around their destination. IOT based technologies have advanced so much and helped public necessities. The use of IOT at a parking lot will help vehicle users to know the availability of a parking location through smartphones. This IOT based parking system is created by the use of microcontroller, sensors, database server. Sensors will be placed on the ceiling of each parking slot in order to detect the presence of a vehicle. The aim of this project is to design an IOT based smart city parking system. Our system provides visual display of parking lots available to the user destination with the help of GSM module that the user can reserve the lot. The GSM module will automatically respond to the users SMS request by letting him the available slots at a given time. The specific Quick response (QR) code is a fixed for every single user. The user needs to scan the QR code while enter and exit from the parking lot. The action of the user is than reflected in the database and accordingly the time is calculated, and the amount paid by user through credit card. Hence this system reduces the user effort and time of searching the parking lot and avoids the traffic congestion. Our presented Smart City Parking (SCP) system consists of Android app that allows the users to check the availability of parking space and reserve a parking slot accordingly. This system is embedded with Arduino UNO, IR sensors, GSM module and servo motors to control the barrier.
Project ObjectivesResearch Objectives:
- What systems or sensors are used to implement smart parking using IOT?
- What is percentage of pollution reduction by implementing smart parking system?
- How to overcome traffic congestion in commercial area?
- How to consume our time through smart parking?
- How to increase security of parked vehicle?
Academic Objectives:
- To provide an efficient solution for car parking issues.
- To reduce traffic congestion and reduce time in finding the exact parking.
- To allocate Business parking spaces are taken by commuter parking.
- To avoid Environmental impact of excessive fuel use in seeking parking.
Commercial Objectives:
- To assist drivers for safe parking.
- To increase demand of vehicles leading to parking concerns.
- To increase demand for Iot based technology.
- To provide advancements in autonomous and smart parking technology.
-
Other Objectives:
- To develop an intelligent, user friendly smart parking system which reduce the human intervention and also traffic congestion.
- To offer safe and secure parking slots within limited area.
The proposed system is used to indicate the user about the vacancy of parking slots. A user can choose the parking slot in advance, instead of waiting in parking area, where the parking availability is shown through user’s smart phones. IR Sensors will be attached in each slot for detecting the vacancy. The signal from the sensors captured by the Arduino and these signals are then converted from electrical into another form inorder to detect the presence of vehicle in terms of light reflected back from obstacle such as the wall of parking lot. The output from Arduino depends on measurement of amount of light and based on that, slot’s allocation is done. On the other hand the output from Arduino is changed into text format and sent to the smart phone. Now the users are provided with the parking details and can choose appropriate slot to reserve. After reserving particular slot an QR code will be send to the users registered email id or mobile number. When user will park the vehicle in parking area, IR sensor detect the presence of vehicle and a text will be sent to the users smart phone through GSM module to informs the user that your vehicle is parked.
Block diagram

For implementing IOT Based Smart City Parking System, we have used Android studio and MYSQL workbench.
The SCP system consists of following phases:
- Android Application
- Database Server Android Application
The first step of SCP system is the Android application which means an app is developed using Android studio. This app will be used for the user to pre-reserve parking slot. Android application consists of different interfaces in which user login, and parking details will be available then user select the appropriate slot for specific time. Using this application user can also cancel booking within specific time interval.
Android application interfaces:
- Login page
- Signup page
- OTP page
- Forgot password page
- Navigation drawer
- Front end Hardware methodology
- In this section, a QR scanner is attached with QR USB host module which scans the QR code this scanner is connected with Arduino board.
- If QR code matches with the same code stored in database server then Arduino rotates the servo motor about 90 degree to open the barrier.
- Two IR sensors are placed at the entrance point inorder to detect the vehicle’s presence when vehicle enters the parking slot.
- After vehicles detection a GSM module will sent SMS on user’s registered email id to show that vehicle is parked.
- Two IR sensors are placed at the exit point to detect the vehicle’s presence when user leaves the parking slot.
- After leaving the parking slot Arduino rotate servo motor about 90 degree to close the barrier.
Key Benefits and Beneficiaries: (Please identify clearly the benefits and potential customers/beneficiaries of the project.)
- Smart Parking System is easier, efficient and less time consuming as it uses Android Application to reserve the nearest parking slot.
- The Android app is flexible to be used by both users and administrator.
- SCP system helps the users in finding out the availability of a parking slot.
- The proposed model saves the time of visitors in searching and booking a parking slot.
- The system provides an easy way for the user to choose the suitable parking slot for vehicle and the process is made more efficient.
