The electricity consumption in Pakistan is at 35thin world energy consumption list. The internet of things is an emerging field and IoT based devices have created a revolution in electronics and IT. The foremost objective of this project is to create awareness about energy consumption and efficient use of the home appliances for energy savings. Due to manual work ,our existing electricity billing system has major drawbacks.This system gives the information on the meter reading, power cut and the alert system when energy consumption exceeds beyond the specified limit using IoT.
This idea is being implemented to reduce the human efforts to collect the monthly readings and minimize the technical problems regarding billing process. This project extends the design and implementation of an energy monitoring system with pre-intimation of power agenda .
The advantage of this system is that the consumer can track and understand the power consumption by their appliances and can take further steps to control them and thus help in energy conservation. The information regarding the bill amount ,payment and the pre-planned power shut down details are communicated to the consumer. It has main objective of giving the pre-intimation of power schedule and the an alert system for producing an alarm when the energy consumption exceeds beyond the certain limits. It has also the faciality of terminating the power when the user are out of the station. This system is very precise and accurate.
Project ObjectivesThe idea is being proposed to reduce the human efforts to collect the monthly readings and to minimize the technical problems regarding the billing process. The information regarding the billing amount ,payment and the pre -planned shut- down details are communicated to the consumer. If the costumer does not pay the bill in time the user is informed through a massage using IoT. If still the costumer are unable to pay the bill, then as pre designated consideration . One alert message will be sent and try to communicate with the costumer .If costumer do not pay attention the automatically power connection is disconnected from the remote server. It will provide us pre intimation of power cut details and also the energy consumption on daily bases. It will provides an alert if the energy consumption goes beyond the certain limit. It also have the facility of terminating the power supply and also have the facility of reconnecting when necessary dues are done. when the resident is out off station, he can cut the power to minimize the wastage of energy. It is an effective way of greater accuracy , improved billing.
Project Implementation MethodThe hardware architecture of our project mainly consist of an energy meter , an ARM cortex M4, an relay network ,a Wifi module ,a display system and security system including LEDs and keypad. The load driven by the relay network which in turn is connected to the processor and energy meter. Once the load is turned on ,the energy meter starts to store different parameters such as out power, voltage and current rating etc. This information is pass on to the processor unit(ARM Cortex M4) where data is used to find the proportional cost consumption.
This data is encrypted and passed on to the web server through a wifi module(CC3100 Booster Pack) and is stored in the cloud for real time monitoring .This is the basic working of the circuitry .When ever a consumer wants to see the billing information offline ,he can do so only after proper authorization procedure is followed.
Benefits of the ProjectThe system will show the consumption on daily basis ,hence it will help to reduce the daily consumption by comparing the daily usages.
It will reduces the human interference to collect the monthly reading and it saves the money.
The pre-shut down details help to take the necessary preventive measures and also help to do the necessary work related with the electricity.
The alarm system will help to create awareness to the public regarding their energy consumption and the corresponding charges.
It prevent the wastage of energy by disconnecting the connection when the resident are out of station.
The LCD display ,situated in the distribution board help the residents in the apartments to be aware of the messages in the LCD display as they are far away the from the energy meter.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableUsage of ARM processor increased the speed and accuracy of the system from conventionally used IC. The available smart energy meters use Zigbee/Bluetooth modules for wireless transmission of data . Our project was designed with IoT solution for reliable and efficient service. The entire software system was designed using Node Red palette in IBM bluemix. This added a versatility to the system that other web server could not handle . Not only measurement regarding the amount of electricity used modified ,but the meter also allowed the consumer to control the maximum consumption using internet communication . In this way the combination of such a smart meter with an appropriate communication infrastructure has provided remote access and feasibility . The system can be enhanced further to detect electricity theft. Also , the design can be modified to work with multiple energy meters in high rising apartments or organizations connected the same network.
