Project Title

IoT BASED PLC TRAINER

Project Area of Specialization

Internet of Things

Project Summary

In this modern world, our main requirment of the industry is advanced technology, portibility and easy-to-control system.

The total installed base of Internet of Things (IoT) connected devices is projected to amount to 75.44 billion worldwide by 2025, a fivefold increase in ten years. The IoT, enabled by the already ubiquitous Internet technology, is the next major step in delivering Internet’s promise of making the world a connected place.

Therefore, keeping in mind this emerging technology, we are designing an IoT based PLC Trainer which will stimulate different industrial processes in just one place. It will accept different inputs through special purpose industrial sensors, showing their status and also making it a "Wireless Controllable System" with the help of cloud computing.

It is an Educational Trainer which could be used in several universities providing students the basic knowledge of industrial processes.

Project Objectives

  • A trainer for illustration and practices in engineering universities for better practice and learning purposes
  • This project includes various important sensors which are applicable in many manufacturing processes
  • It increases the feasibility of an engineer who is in charge of a particular plant to monitor and control
  • Using IoT in the age of Industry 4.0
  • Predictive Maintenance

Project Implementation Method

The objectives of the implementation phase can be summarised as follow:

  • Deciding suitable industrial sensors
  • Deciding medium of communication between sensors and PLC
  • Deciding suitable model for PLC and IoT device
  • Designing structure for the trainer
  • Deciding the budget for project
  • Purchasing all the components
  • Testing the components
  • Setting up a plant
  • Implementing sensors into the plant
  • Interfacing with the PLC
  • Interfacing PLC with IoT Device
  • Fetching and displaying the data on HMI
  • Finally Controlling and Monitoring the plant wirelessly

Benefits of the Project

Here are some of the benefits of this project:

  • Better understanding of industrial processes for the students
  • Increasing the mobility of an operator monitoring and controlling the plant
  • Getting smart with the data
  • From Industry 3.0 to Industry 4.0
  • Remotely accessing the data to monitor the process
  • Preventative maintenance
  • Live trends of the process
  • Automated Alerts for downtimes
  • Centralizing the data

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We have establised two systems on the trainer: Water Tank System, Conveyer Belt Sysem.

We are using 8 industrial sensors both analog and digital viz

  • Temperature sensor PT-100 (To check the temperature of liquid in the tank)
  • Inductive proximity sensor (To detect metal objects)
  • Capacitive proximity sensor (To detect plastic objects)
  • Load cell (To measure the weight of the objects)
  • PIR sensor (For motion detection of the objects and conveyer)
  • Photoelectric sensor (To count the objects)
  • Level sensor ( To check the level of liquid in the tank)
  • Encoder (To monitor and control the speed of conveyer)

Outputs of the sensors will then send an electronic digital signal to the PLC after successful sensing and positive outcome.

If the parameters (measured values) are according to the set values then it will not send any alerts but if the measured values are out of the set values then it will immediately send an alert to the HMI and the person dedicated for the task through the WINTEK IoT Device (CMT-G02).

Regardless of the location of the specialist, system can now be controlled and monitored.
