Project Summary

Keeping pets takes many commitments. This includes keeping them company, showing your concerns and of course, feeding them on time and in the correct way. However, not everyone is a pet expert, taking care of your pet’s diet can be hard and time consuming. One of the top health concerns of pets are overeating and obesity. Especially at younger age, they are usually satisfied with whatever much is given to them. Many adult pets are also fed unscientifically that later may cause short lifespan. Another problem of feeding pet is that owners might not always be home regularly. Being occupied by personal plans knowing that they still have a starving little fellow at home to be taken care of is always a concern that bothers owners. The third concern that we want to deal with is the fact that there has not been any product on the market right now that is able to dispense different foods for different kinds of pets. However, pets themselves might not necessarily recognize the potential health problems of eating the wrong food. Therefore, we want to take care of owners’ concern of feeding by building a phone controlled automatic pet feeder that can dispense the correct amount of food on time, based on the type of animal that is demanding it.

If you have a pet in your home and you do not have anyone to feed it when you are away from home, then you definitely need some kind of machine to do this job. So here we are building IoT Pet Feeder machine, which is simple, efficient and cost effective. Using this machine, you can feed your Pet by Android App from anywhere in the world. You just have to Tap a button on your app and rest of the things will be done by this machine. In this project, we are using a Node MCU ESP8266 as the main controller, a Servo motor to open & close feeding bottle, an android app there will be two – three  buttons where the bottle easily display graphically that show how much food is there and when the bottle will empty we will receive an email to ”fill up your pet’s food bottle the bottle is empty” we will set the bottle to open for 10 sec when the bottle will empty food will fill automatically.

Project Objectives

The proposed system runs based periodic measurements of the pet’s weight and food level inside the tank. The system can be set to:

Smart Mode: 

User can define the energy fact of the food inside the tank and type of the cat. The cat’s weight will be, further, measured and the system can compute the right amount of the food to be dispensed to cat. The right amount of food is based on the adequate energy that selected cat shall take per day. This section will be further explained in detail. 

Control Mode: 

The system can be set to control mode. Control mode allows user to dispense food with two different methods. the control mode can be run as: 

Automatic: 

Under the automatic control mode, the system can be scheduled for certain time to dispense the food with adjustable dispensing time.  

Manual: 

Under manual control mode, user can dispense food at any time for certain duration defined as adjustable dispensing time.

App: 

Android app will connect with the prototype and cloud database which is firebase.

Cloud database: 

The cloud database we will connect with app and also with the prototype which will show the status of bowl and bottle the owner can easily expect all the good result from here.

Project Implementation Method

Turn on food valve:

From the mobile app there will be the button which work for open the bottle for 10 sec to provide the requirement food for pet.

Turn off food valve: 

From the mobile app there will be the button which work for close the bottle.

Valve status: 

The valve status will show on the android app that show us the position of the valve that is close or opened.

Bowl status: 

The bowl status will also show on the app that the bowl is empty or half or full the owner will see anytime everywhere in the world.

Alert on empty bowl:

You will receive an email that your bottle is empty fill up the bottle the owner will check the msg for information.

Auto on valve for 30 seconds if bowl is empty:

The system will also fill up the bottle when the bottle is empty the senser will sense that the bowl is empty so the bottle will open for 10 sec the bowl will fill.

Can be used for cats or small dogs

Which holds 2 days of food at 3 feedings per day 

Has 5-7 cups

Has a maximum diameter of 12”

Is not battery operated 

Battery backup 

Has food dishes which are dishwasher safe 

Is robust enough that a pet cannot get to the food stored for later feedings
