IoT based indoor localization
IoT based indoor localization using Wi-Fi is a GPS-free positioning system that uses Wi-Fi to locate a target node. Wi-Fi location uses already existing infrastructure and Wi-Fi access points (APs) to calculate where a device is located. GPS is the most famous positioning system that we know. However, certain other application demands to locate a person or navigate person in indoor areas like in shopping malls or college building. GPS fails in such cases because of its inability to work in non-line of sight conditions like walls, roofs and feniture. There are various methods of indoor localization however, unlike BLE beacons or RFID, Wi-Fi does not require additional hardware or infrastructure maintenance. Wi-Fi-based indoor localization is an accurate and cost effective solution because of the wide availability of Wi-Fi devices and relatively large coverage range. IoT based indoor localization using W-Fi finds its applications in guiding and helping a Disabled person to nevigate in a building, locating a person in an area, tracking people and objects in hazardous environments.
Raspberry Pi 3 model B+ was used as a target node to detect its position. Atleast three Anchor nodes(Access Points) were required to estimate the position. The intensity of the received signals (RSSI) from nearby Wi-Fi devices was measured. The received signal strengths from three access points was converted into distance, depending on the log distance relation, using the Log Distance Signal Propagation Model. Trilateration method was used for indoor localization which makes use of the point of intersection of three circles of Wi-Fi Acces Points which gives the exact position of user. This position was mapped on Graphical User Interface Display to provide the graphical position to the user.
