Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryThis project's main purpose is to provide a real-life solution to the parents to monitor their baby’s and the surrounding conditions while they are away for work or other reasons (household chores).To solve this problem, we have decided to develop this IoT based system, through which parents can be immediately notified about urgent situations. The proposed system exploits sensors to monitor vital parameters, like body temperature, gas leakage in the room, room temperature, crying as well as live streaming through their mobile phones. This is a new approach as compared to previous GSM based systems.
IOT based baby monitoring system has the following benefits:
- With this system, parents do not have to rely or trust on any care-taker for their baby’s safety as many incidents have been reported on the mistreatment with the babies when the parents are away.
- Moreover, the parents who place their baby in separate room cannot hear the baby crying and nor can be there to put their baby back to sleep. So, if they use the IoT based baby monitoring cradle, they won’t have to go through the fatigue of getting up and soothing their babies.
- The amount of time parents needs to attend their babies is greatly reduced as they do not really need to be physically there 24/7 if the baby is lying in the cradle unattended.
- Lightweight and portable.
- Advanced system that provides overall safety and care of the child with it being cost-effective as well.
In present times, female participation in the work force has greatly increased and both parents have to work due to increased living expenses. This has also increased the amount of work for them to manage along with looking after their babies. Moreover, household mothers also prefer something that can be reliable and provide them the ease to be away from their baby when in urgency. It has been found that babies stop crying and sleep once put in a cradle if all their other necessities are fulfilled. So, this system is a good solution to provide convenience to the parents to continuously monitor their baby’s conditions both in normal and abnormal situations and save their time as well as they can simultaneously do other work and monitor the baby through their mobile phones too.
Project ObjectivesThe proposed system exploits sensors to monitor vital parameters, like body temperature, gas leakage in the room, room temperature, crying as well as live streaming through their mobile phones.Sensors will be connected to the cradle which will gather parameters such as body
temperature of the baby, room temperature, crying and safety measures like gas leakage.
- An external Wi-Fi camera will be installed on the cradle to enable real time vision
- monitoring.
- NodeMCU will be used as the micro-controller to receive and upload data to the
- Internet and will be accessed by the user (parent) via MQTT Dash mobile applications.
- NodeMCU will be used to retrieve data from sensors and send commands to actuators
- (swinging motor and musical toy ).
- This app will show the user (parent) about the baby’s condition.
- Under abnormal conditions, a notification will be sent to the user through IFTTT mobile
- application such as when crying will be detected for longer durations.
- Parents will be able to use the app to control the swinging of cradle and turning on/off
- the musical toy and fan by toggling the buttons.

•Simulation of the control circuit of the baby monitoring system using Proteus.
•Interfacing of sensors (body temperature, room temperature, sound, gas leakage detection) and actuators on the veroboard for testing.
•Implementing codes for each sensor separately on Arduino IDE for testing purposes.
•Designing 3D model of the baby cradle using Autocad.
FYP2
- Establishing wireless communication between NodeMCU and mobile phone app and IOT
- server (using Adafruit MQTT).
- Finalizing the algorithm of baby monitoring system.
- Implementing the complete monitoring system in a cradle and run it.
This system is a good solution to provide convenience to the
parents to continuously monitor their baby’s conditions both in normal or abnormal situations
and save their time as well as they can simultaneously do other work and monitor the baby
through their mobile phones too.
