Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryThe project focuses on the use of Phase Change Materials(PCMs) for the cooling of electronic components. PCMs are special materials that have high latent heat storage capacity and perform more well when mixed with Nanoparticles. In the experiment, we have an aluminum heat sink in which we will add PCMs and nanoparticles, then we will provide uniform heating through a heater, PCM will melt and during this phase change it will absorb maximum heat in it which will contribute in cooling the electronics. Not only the experimentation but simulation of this project will also be done on softwares like ANSYS or COMSOL.
Project ObjectivesWe have done our research and literature survey of various PCMs and Nanoparticles. The objective of our project is to use PCMs and Nanoparticles that can provide maximum absorbing capacity and proper concentration of both materials combined. This is done to provide a better solution for cooling the electronic components. In some cases, it can end the use of fins on the heat sink and in severe conditions a smart design can be made by using both the PCMs and fins for better heat transfer. And to see the simulation which is also part of the project.
Project Implementation MethodWe will create a Data Acquisition System which comprises of a power supply, Arduino mega that connects thermocouples to the computer for digital reading. Multiple K type wire thermocouples are attached to the heat sink to measure temperatures at every place of the heat sink. We will record the readings at different concentrations of PCMs and Nanoparticles. After this we will do the simulation to see their ideal behavior and compare our results.
Benefits of the ProjectThis project will help in the designing of a compact heat sink that has the ability to absorb maximum heat coming from the electronic equipment to maintain its proper temperature. It will also help in the further studies of the specific heat transfer phenomenon.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableWe will have the results from experimentation as well as simulation from the software, which would indicate the benefit of using PCMs, how it has helped in the electronics cooling through its better heat transfer qualities. And the proper concentrations of PCMs and Nanoparticles required for absorbing maximum heat and keeping the electronics at optimum temperature.
