Investigation of Effects of Novel Build Orientation on Control of Mechanical Property Anisotropy of 3D Printed Parts
Project Area of Specialization 3D/4D PrintingProject Summary3D printing is robust manufacturing technology, which has gained immense popularity in the wake of 4th industrial revolution. The technology could be very promising to manufacture highly intricate and complex parts rapidly and economically. Nevertheless, the layered deposition process is an inherent limitation towards the control of mechanical property anisotropy. The 3D printed parts are typically strong in print direction, yet relatively fragile in the lateral directions. This limitation could potentially hamper the use of 3D printed parts for complex loading applications. This project is designed to address those limitations.
Project ObjectivesFollowing objectives are drawn based on the problem statement:
- To investigate effects of build orientation on the mechanical property anisotropy
- To express mechanical property anisotropy as mathematical function of raster angle, using design of experiment software
Methodology: The following figure tells us 3-D printed part orientation. An object with certain ? orientation is placed on the build platform along x, y & z-axis. This object is made on build platform by successive layers of material along different orientations.

Following are the benefits of pursuing this project:
- Better understanding.
- Application specific 3D printed parts.
- Tailored properties.
- Combating the challenge of Anisotropy
- Build orientation would be changed at incremental angle of 20°.
- Effect of build orientation on thermal properties will be studied.
- Effect of build orientation on manufacturability will also be discussed and analyzed.
