Project Summary

The project aim is to automate the industry based on Cyber Physical System. There are three parts in the project, the first is consisting of two slave PLCs each connected to individual industrial plant connected with the master PLC through MODBUS (RS-485) communication.The second part includes “Cloud and Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT)” in which the infomation (received from slaves by the master) of the plants can be saved on cloud and  monitored on the webserver wirelessly in real time.The last part is to make our system fault tolerant by detecting the fault and making a decision accordingly to solve the problem using Artifical intelligence using Fuzzy Logic, thus making the whole system efficient and automatic.

Project Objectives

  • Incorporation of cyber physical systems ( IoT and Industry 4.0) in industrial automation.
  • Developing a communication network between PLCs through Modbus.
  • Design and implement remote monitoring and fault diagnostics.

Project Implementation Method

We aim to design a cyber physical system which consists of a master PLC connected to the slave PLCs through communication protocol Modbus RS-485. The master will receive the data from its slave PLCs each of which are connected to the plants, one of which is the sorting mechanism of boxes with respect to their lengths, using photoelectric detection of the boxes on the conveyor. Second plant is the fluid level control system, consisting of a tank with a fluid and  inlet and outlet valves. A level sensor will continously measure the level of the fluid. Water is supplied to the tank through inlet valve. On exceeding the setpoint, the outlet valve gets actuated and water will be discharged through it until it attains the set point. The  data obtained from the master PLC from its slaves, is transfered to NodeMCU ESP8266 (an open source IoT platform) which further will upload the whole data to the web server wirelessly, the monitoring of all the collected information is done on the web server from anywhere via Internet. The next part is the handling of faults with in the system by detecting the faults and making decisions using one of the techniques of AI using Fuzzy logic, an expert or AI system provides a capability for examining the process data using statistical analysis. The use of statistical data analysis let the system predict outcomes based on current process assessments. The outcome prediction may be a decision to continue a process in spite of a fault detection.

  • Cyber Physical System (CPS) can contribute to the modern society, as advances in CPS could allow for intelligent machines with machine-learning abilities.
  • This Project simplified the complexity of modern production processes by dividing the control load into sub-systems containing seprate control loops.
  • Smart manufacturing requires massive amounts of real-time data, gathered through sensors, in order to function, the miniaturisation of sensors will help pave the  way to industry 4.0. The development of smaller sensors, combined with the new internet protocol, IPv6 developed in 2012, allows the sensors to become part of the ‘internet of things’, where everything is interconnected online – a defining feature of Industry 4.0.
  • In the manufacturing environment, CPSs can improve processes by sharing real-time information among the industrial machines, suppliers, business systems, and customers.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We aim to deliver the automated Control system based on Cyber Physical System , capable of monitoring the parameters of each plant working in the industry wirelessly through web server  from anywhere in the world via Internet and diagnose the faults present within the system and taking relevant decisions according to the sensitivity of the problem.
