Implementation and Evaluation of Experimental Setup For Knee Prosthesis To Facilitate Lower Limb Amputees
Human gait is unique for every person on the globe. Every person is recognized by their gait cycle, but for an amputee person, it’s difficult to achieve a normal gait. These people lose hope due to their disability. All over the globe many researchers and organizations are working in the field of the prosthesis to facilitate amputee persons, especially transfemoral amputees (TFA) above-knee prosthesis. A better quality of gait cycle is achieved by using a prosthesis.
This project also brought a new idea to the field of prosthesis to facilitate lower limb amputees. We are working on the transfemoural section to achieve a normal gait by controlling the knee joint angle, the position of the leg in space and speed, and the acceleration of the leg in space. The experimental model with sensing assembly is attached on the lateral side of the leg including sensors that are used in the project. We used a rotary encoder to detect the knee joint angle and define a range of motion (ROM) for the movement knee joint. IMU is used to evaluate the position of the leg in space. Orientation and positioning of the leg in space give us a complete trajectory of leg movement that will help us to measure an accurate Gait cycle for that leg.
Following are the deliverable of our project:
The transfemoral prosthesis is beneficial for amputees who lost their lower limbs. The main objective of this project is to facilitate transfemoral amputees because by using prostheses amputees can achieve stability and equilibrium in the gait cycle.
Implementation of wearable experimental setup including sensing unit to evaluate the gait cycle of able bodies.
The project implementation phase is divided into several subphases.
In the first phase brief knowledge about the gait cycle, biomechanics, sensors, and lower limb anatomy is acquired. Many experiments are already taken and researchers are working on them.
In the second phase chose the appropriate sensors are selected to collect datasets from able bodies and interphase with the Arduino controller.
The next stage is the design and development stage in which an effective design prototype model is evaluated and implemented for all selected sensors by having their possible assemblies.
The next stage is the testing and modification stage in which our model is tested in real-time. Based on the datasets collected from the prototype model decide whether there is a need for any improvement in the prototype model or not. If there is a need then modify and compute final datasets to finalize our project’s results.
In the final stage document ur finals and datasets in the form of reports and research articles to present the design, implementation, and outcomes of our project.
The main purpose of this project is to facilitate transfemoral amputees. Following are the benefits of this project.
The final deliverable is an affordable and comfortable hardware prototype that is easy to attach and removable. The sensing unit is mounted on the model through some assemblies. All components used in this project are replaceable and available in the market.
