home-based rapid EV charger with mobile app

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

The development of Electric Vehicle (EV) is taking over the conventional combustion engine now a days. In this project we are designing a home-based rapid EV charger with its mobile app that will give user’s all the readings for the current at which the EV is being charged, its voltage and the time required for EV to be fully charged. The charger is based on the J1772 SAE standard, the EVSE (Electronic Vehicle Supply Equipment) consists of a single-phase AC supply of 220V AC which is passed through a relay then to the J clamp which is connected to the EV.

Project Objectives

In Pakistan, there is no local company manufacturing Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers, they're imported from abroad and therefore are expensive. Our goal in this project is to manufacture an EV charger at a low cost and make it available in the local market at an affordable price. We are also developing a mobile app that links with the charger to provide the user with a friendly interface.

Project Implementation Method

Our project is an EVSE (Electronic Vehicle Supply Equipment) or EV-CHARGER AC LEVEL-2). It is a supply unit for the onboard charger. The EVSE takes single line phase input with a protection circuit and relay to pass the supply voltage to the EV (Electronic Vehicle). There is a CT (Current Transformer) also connected to the output wires that are connected to the J plug, this CT isolate Fault Circuit Interrupt) for measuring the current in the wire. It also consists of a GFCI circuit that checks if there is any ground fault in the circuit or any difference between the I/O current and produces a small current that will monitor the leakage current. The connector used for the charging system is J-plug which is a North American standard due to which communication between EVSE and EV happens by its two communication pins: Proximity and Control Pilot pins. The control pilot is the main signal of the whole EVSE, it is due to this signal the relay on the EVSE is open and closed depending upon the voltage of the square wave which is initially +- 12V  then it is dropped down to 9V when the j plug is connected to the EV, this dropping down of voltage happens with resistance on the pilot pin given by the car, when the voltage at the pilot pin drops to 6v it means that the car has started to charge and the relay from which the AC supply is provided will be closed which allows the supply voltage to be passed to the EV and the onboard charger in the EV would convert the AC voltage into DC and start charging. The input used in the charging system ranges between 220-240 V AC with 10-32 amps current.

Benefits of the Project

One of the major problems of electric vehicle industry in Pakistan is that there is no local company manufacturing EV chargers. Most of them are being imported, which is very costly. We are trying to design an EV charger in Pakistan that can be made available to people at an affordable price. This would be one of the main benefits of this project as it will help reduce the imports that effect our economy. Also as we can make EV chargers available at an affordable price we can promote the EV industry and help people switch from combustion engines to environmental friendly EVs.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We will deliver a complete product EV level 2 charger with app. the charger consists of a control pilot module which generates a control pilot signal that is a square wave of +-12V with a frequency of 1000KH this signal is sent to the EV that places different resistance on the pilot pin and the 12V are dropped depending on the resistance on the pilot pin.

We created a database where we store the data we receive from our sensors, this data is then used in our mobile app to show current, voltage and power readings.
