FPGA Implementation of ECDSA for ITS application
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryIntelligent transport system(ITS) is a solution to most of the traffic congestion and transportation problem that were raised since means of transportation came into existence. In this system, all the vehicles are connected to each other wirelessly and transfer their information regarding speed, position and lane changing in profound ways. As Intelligent transport system(ITS) is one of the significant outcomes information technology, its major concern is to focus on the information security and reliability. ITS comprises of two main factors which are communication and security. Without security, ITS is not humanly feasible. As far as security is concerned, different encryption methods are used such as Elliptic curve cryptography(ECC) and Rivest, Shamir and Adelman(RSA). The proposed project uses Elliptic curve cryptography(ECC) because it uses lesser key size and the time required for key generation and signature generation are very much fast for ECC as compared to RSA.
Project ObjectivesThe goal of this project is to implement Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm(ECDSA) on hardware. Further, implementation of an architectural design of security algorithm(ECDSA) is considered one of the major scope of this project. The main task includes implementation of ECDSA (Receiver side) on Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA), which is capable to validate the real time constraints of ITS applications.
Project Implementation MethodElliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm(ECDSA) is a digital signature algorithm which works with a corresponding key generated through Elliptic Curve Cryptography(ECC). The key contain variables that are based upon certain elliptic curve equations. Digital Signature Algorithm has some global domain parameters which are compared on the sender and receiver side to make sure that data integrity is guaranteed. ECDSA is a dual technique for securing data at both end sender and receiver. The following diagram provides a brief description of its working on both sender and receiver end.

Some graduates already worked on the sender side. Our task is to work on the receiver side of this system. We will use different parameters for this process. Key generation is a combination of two steps. One involves the generation of private key while the other involves the generation of public key. Hash function has a significant role in digital signature formation.
Benefits of the ProjectThe major concern for Intelligent Transport System(ITS) is information security and reliability. Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm(ECDSA) guarantees data integrity. The goal of this project is to design an FPGA prototype of security algorithm for ITS.Implementation of ECDSA on FPGA is capable to validate the real time constraints of ITS applications.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe expected outcome of this project is to design an FPGA based architecture for Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm(ECDSA) for receiver side.
