Augmented reality is becoming the biggest market in the world, but Pakistan is a country where it is very limited and ultra-expensive. Holographic projection is the new wave of technology that will change how we view things in the new era. Our project of holography will have tremendous effect on all fields of life including business, education, science, art, healthcare, flight simulation, air traffic control, battlefield simulation, weather diagnostics, entertainment, and robotics. To understand how a holographic projector works we need to know what a hologram is. Holography is the method we use to record patterns of light. These patterns are reproduced as a three-dimensional image called a hologram.
The project will be comprised of a imaging/Recording setup which will include a mechanical assembly, where our 3D object will be placed to be recorded. The camera will record a video of that object and send it for post processing where that recorded video will be processed through Python based algorithms to split it in 4 views then it will be converted in 3D animated form through Blender and few other operations will be done through Adobe premiere software.  After processing we will interconnect Liquid Crystal display (LCD) and feed it with Processed video and then project our video to a set of semi reflective mirror pyramid to provide a 3D floating view at the center of Pyramid.

The 3D holographic projection  technology is the new sign of future technology and communications . it will become a very integral part of human societies and civilization. It can be used for virtual audio and video communication which provide real virtual environment.

Project Objectives

The aim of the project is to develop a holographic display and capture system for visualization of the 360-degree view of real objects.

Project Implementation Method

The project is divided into 3 main parts
Part1: Design and development of imaging setup.
Part 2: Design and development of display setup.
Part 3: Back in processing for imaging, display and interfacing between imaging and display setup.

1) Design and development of imaging setup:
Part 1 will include the camera, the Motor, the microcontroller need to drive that motor and the rotating plate with a mechanical assembly. The rotating plate will be used precisely to rotate the 3D object and the camera will capture the multiple views of the object from 0 to 360 degree. All the information will be intelligently recorded by a customly design python-based software.

2) Design and development of display setup
Part 2 is for display setup. The display setup will include the regular 2D LCD screen combined with the optically arranged semi reflective mirrors. The semi reflective mirrors will be cut and oriented in such a way that they reflect the incident light at 90 degree. There will be 4 mirrors in the system, each mirror will produce one view in each direction and combinedly it will produce the effect of 3D depth. 4 views will include the captured view from 0 degree, 90 degree, 180 degree and 270 degree.  The entire display setup will be in table-top format and it will also have a wooden assembly.

3) Back in processing for imaging, display and interfacing between imaging and display setup:
Back in processing will be done through algorithms created in python and blender software.
The back in processing has been divided into two phases. The first phase will be capturing the views and orienting them for splitting them into 4 different videos.  The second phase include the captured images  which will be sent to the display part and display software will divide the four views into a single frame.

After concluding all these steps, an image (our captured object through camera) appears to be floating around the center of the pyramid. A 3D image with a binocular parallax is displayed hence a sense of reality will be obtained.

  • Entertainment: games will comprised of Holography in which user will not be able to tell the difference between the real world and its augmentation

  • Live Stages and Dramas: live stage performance can be done through our hologram technology without need of any people presence to perform live.

The final deliverable project will consist of a Rotating Circular plate connected with a motor (AC Motor) which can carry a heavy weight of object which will be rotated to all four Sides along with a Circular Plate above it.
moreover, we will have a very high-resolution Camera which can accurately capture the video of our object placed above the circular plate.
Additionally, we will have a Processing Machine in which we can monoochromat our video, Split Our video into 4 parts and convert it in 3D animated form. Furthermore, we will have a set of Semi Reflective Mirrors which will be transformed into Pyramid Assembly and that assembly will be placed above anLCD liquid crystal displayin such a way that the light emitting out of Liquid crystal display will reflect with the mirrors of pyramid at an angle of 45 degree.  after reflection we will have an illuminated hologram in the free space/air in the Central territory Of the Pyramid Assembly.
