Project Area of Specialization Shared EconomyProject SummaryIntroduction: An electric car is an automobile that is propelled by one or more electric motors, using electrical energy stored in rechargeable batteries or another energy storage device. Electric motors give electric cars instant torque, creating strong and smooth acceleration. They are also around three times as efficient as cars with an internal combustion engine.
Concept: Our basic concept is to make an electric car which is much more efficient than the normal combustion engine car. The Electric formula car that we are designing is a prototype for the actual electric car for testing purposes.
Basic Idea: Design and fabrication of the chassis for the prototype of the electric car which will only fit 1 person. Select a motor which is specifically designed for electric vehicles to achieve the level of efficiency that is required.
Project Objectives- In this project we are making an electric car which is much more efficient than a normal combustion engine car.
- The electric motor kit that we are using in this formula car will be designed in such a way that it will also be applicable in every car.
- Design and fabrication of the chassis.
- Design an environmental friendly formula car.
- Control the motor through VFD.
- Fabricating the suspension and axle.
- Paper work and calculations.
- Research on Spaceframe Chassis.
- Designing of Spaceframe Chassis on Solidworks.
- Fabrication of the Chassis and Suspension.
- Selection of motor and batteries.
- Purchasing all the components required.
- Final Assembly.
- Testing and Analysis of the design.
- Error correction & finalizing the Project.
The main motivation for this project was the automotive industry going towards electric vehicles because of rising fuel prices and environmental problems and the no. of EVs increasing day by day.
And right now there is no work or research being done in Pakistan on EVs on big scale only some small scale industries are working on it therefore we wanted to make this project to enhance and encourage the production of EVs in Pakistan.
And we also saw Tesla Automotive Industry growing rapidly over last 5 years, but tesla is still not being introduced in Pakistan, therefore we decided to take the initiative.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableIn the end, we will conclude our project by saying that this is an innovative and a good field to work on and we can slowly and gradually convert to EVs just to save our non-renewable resources and save our environment from polluting on daily basis. The field of EVs is a very vast field which has millions of possibilities and outcomes especially in Pakistan where this field almost untouched.
In our prototype, we designed a formula electric car which is much more efficient and environmentally friendly than the combustion engine cars. However we had too many limitations in terms of technical and financial constraints. Due to our limitations we were only able to run the car on a jack stand, which shows that our mechanical design is flawless and totally operational, but not on ground because of the underpowered (7.5hp) motor which was selected due to the financial constraints.
Secondly the VFD we used was also a limitation because it couldn’t increase the starting torque needed for the car, again this inverter was just selected due to the financial constraints we couldn’t go to a more capable VFD because it was much more expensive.
