Enhancement of Dielectric And Thermal Properties Of Liquid Insulators
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryWith the rapid development of power system, voltage level and transmission capacity are rising which not only makes the volume and weight of power equipment increase continuously, but also reduces the safety and reliability of equipment. Oil-paper insulation, as a more mature insulation technology has been widely used in the power equipment. Traditionally, mineral oils are widely used in power transformers due to excellent electrical characteristics. However, mineral insulating oils may easily lead to fire or even explosion accident in transformers due to the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in them, which do not satisfy the requirements of fire and safety.
what we bring through our research is a liquid insulator which is as efficient as common mineral oil used in transformer as well as environmentally friendly.
After doing a lot of research on different oils, ester oil is chosen to be the best replacement for transformer oils. Ester base oils offer several advantages, including biodegradability, higher flash point, higher thermal conductivity, lower calorific value and higher temperature stability. Consequently, ester-based oils offer better benefit-to-cost ratios than mineral oil.
From the year 2010, interest in nanodielectric fluids applications has increased significantly. the addition of nano-particles to the oil improves the dielectric behaviour of the fluid increasing its breakdown voltage and the AC pulse and other thermal properties. The application of such liquids could achieve more compact designs of transformers and improve the reliability of the new high voltage transformers for AC.
Project Objectives1) Selection of suitable oil with good dielectric and thermal qualities: To achieve this objective, Different tests will be performed on number of liquid dielectric oils such as ester oil and different vegetable oils. Researches have been made for utilizing ester-based transformer liquids, which are biodegradable, non-harmful and have very good dielectric and thermal properties.
2) Usage of Nano particles with oils for improving dielectric and thermal properties of base liquids.
Different proportion of nanoparticle will be added in base liquid. it will be done to check that up to what extent does the nanoparticles bring change to our base liquid. whether this change is increasing the properties of our base liquids.
3)Cost efficiency will be observed. the basic part of our research is to make a cost-efficient oil product which can easily replace common transformer oils with greater quality and cost efficiency.
4)As a modern engineer, our basic aim is to make an environmentally friendly product, our ester oil with addition of nano particles is 100 percent biodegradable product which will help us in going one step further to a clean and green Pakistan.
Project Implementation Methodstep 1: Choosing a suitable oil (keeping in note the oil performance, cost efficiency and environmental friendliness).
Step 2: testing of oil. test includes Breakdown voltage, Tan delta test, Water content test, Viscosity test, Flash point test, Pour point test.
Step 3: Selection of different types of nanoparticles (conductive, insulators, semi conductive nanoparticles).
Step 4: Addition of nanoparticles in base liquid (ester oil) and testing the oil on basis of different type of nanoparticles.
Step 5: Observing the change in the performance of base liquid after addition of nanoparticles. amount of addition of particle will also be observed.
Step 7: Ageing test to check the durability of Liquid Insulators.
Step 6: Data collection, analysis and writing a final report on basis of oil quality & cost efficiency
Benefits of the Project1) High quality transformer oil with enhanced dielectric and thermal properties.
2) Cost effective transformer Oil.
3) Environmentally friendly Oil product.
4) Durable liquid insulators
