Energy Management for Microgrid
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryThe flow power networks will encounter a significant change in the coming years. The new age is the Micro-Grid which is described by information and communication layer enabling the communication between the different components of the grid. It needs to think about all sides of power grid, making it more intelligent, flexible and profitable. This idea is exhibited as a response to changes in the electricity market, aiming to manage the increased demand while ensuring a better quality of service and more safety.
We study a micro-grid energy management problem which comprises multiple smart consumers i.e. inflexible & flexible loads. The renewable energy resources inject the excess energy in the Electrical Storage System (ESS). An optimized energy management model using time of use pricing techniques is proposed to reduce the total electricity cost in the microgrid. Our main motive to maximize the profit for consumers.
Project Objectives- Reliability: The consumers require higher energy availability than can be provided by the local utility. This is primarily for stable voltage and frequency requirements.
- Demand Side Management: Main purpose is to fulfil the consumers demand on their requirement according to availability of power sources.
- Efficiency/Economics: Utility electric prices (both energy and demand) have either become unpredictable or are escalating too high. Our purpose to reduce cost of electricity in peak hours.
- Environmental Impact: The utility does not share the consumer standards for levels of carbon emissions. By the use of renewable energy sources, we have to reduce pollution effect in environment.
- Time of use (TOU) rates are a type of electricity rate used by some utilities for billing customers.
- TOU rates are characterized by different prices between “peak hours” and “off-peak” hours.
- Some rates also have other intermediate price periods as well.
- TOU rates can apply to both residential and commercial customers.
- The exact details of a customer’s TOU rate will depend on the specific rate plan offered by their electric utility.
- Provide efficient, low-cost, clean energy
-
Improve the operation and stability of the regional electric grid
-
Reduce grid “congestion” and peak loads
-
Reducing fuel use, line losses
Sort out energy production (along with conservation of resources) problem.
This strategy is not only fruitful in term of energy conservation, it has also increased the life time and efficiency of power grid by satisfying load demand and ultimately gaseous emission is reduced.
