Project Title

Energy demand control under dynamic price-based demand response program

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

It is a key figure in smart grids that the generation of electricity meet the demand of the consumer in real time. For keeping the balance of generation and demand persistently in uncertain and fluctuating conditions, dynamic price-based demand control of the consumer is handled by a closed loop super twisting sliding mode controller (STSMC). This balance of generation and demand is attained through originating a price signal depending on the disproportion between generation and demand in real time. This price signal is broadcasted to the agents of demand side load management (DSLM) which then adopts the techniques like load shifting, load shedding etc. to reduce or increase the demand of consumer depending on the price of electricity at that instant. We demonstrate a control theoretic approach for persistent demand control by closed loop demand control by adopting dynamic pricing. For this a renewable energy integrated micro grid scenario is discussed numerically to show that the demand of consumer can be controlled through STSMC which regulates the electricity price of the energy to the DSLM agents of smart grid community. The over all demand elasticity of the current study is represented by a first-order dynamic price generation model having a piece-wise linear price-based demand response. Simulations environment for this whole scenario is developed in MATLAB/Simulink. The simulations validate the closed loop price-based elastic demand control can be useful technique to trace down the generation of a renewable energy integrated micro grid.

Project Objectives

Objective of the research is to control the demand of consumer in real time through dynamic pricing in a fluctuating conditions of renewable energy integrated micro grid.

Project Implementation Method

Simulations environment for this whole scenario is developed in MATLAB/Simulink. A scenario consisting local renewable energy grid with bulk supply from the utility company to minimize the dependence on the bulk supply from utility company and to better utilize and manage the renewable energy.

Benefits of the Project

Benefits of the project are

  1. Lower dependence on the bulk utility supply.
  2. Better utilize and manage the renewable energy system.
  3. Lower energy cost and lower electricity bill through dynamic pricing.
  4. Automation of demand control and also making  energy demand of smart grid community more predictable and deterministic.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Before our proposed model the demand of the consumer is controlled through a PI controller but the demand of consumer overshoot at the start of simulation but with our proposed model the demand of consumer will not overshoot this is because our proposed model provides pricing signal continuously to the demand response programs employed at the consumer buildings which regulates the loads of the consumer by load shifting techniques etc.
