EMG Controlled Prosthetic Hand
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryArm amputees are people who have lost their upper limb due to accident, trauma or any disease affecting the limbs. Such people cannot perform functions which require using the hand, not even routine activities in day-to-day life such as holding the objects, moving them, eating and all the like functions. An EMG controlled prosthesis is an externally powered artificial limb that you control with the electrical signals generated naturally by your own muscles. The objective of the project is to design low cost myoelectric hand which utilize Myo-electric control. Surface EMG signals had been acquired from the residual limb of the hand, perform preprocessing task and featured extraction on EMG signals. The final output of EMG signals applied through servo motor to the 3D Myo-electric hand. The hand will be able to help improve the quality of life of upper limb amputees. Myoelectric hand component perform better than conventional prosthesis in terms of function, weight, comfort and cosmetics.
Project ObjectivesPeople who lost their upper limbs can not perform daily routine activities such as holding the objects, moving them, eating etc.. Our aim is to design them a prosthetic hand with affordable price that enables amputees to better perform daily routine functions.
Project Implementation MethodThe muscle generate a very faint electrical signals whenever the muscle is contracted or relaxed.
EMG Sensor:Signal processing is done to get information and reduce noise such as filtering ,rectification, thresholding.
Electrodes:The electrodes on the surface of these muscle reads these signals. Surface Electrodes Silver chloride pre-gelled.
EMG shield:To amplified and reduced noise.
Signal Flow Overview
Actuation: Servo Motors are used as actuators.
Microcontroller: Arduino Uno
Voltage Regulators: These are used to prevent a situation in which a servo could be stalling and drawing a large amount of current from the battery.
Benefits of the ProjectThis Project is for a social cause.
- It can improve mobility and the ability to manage daily activities, as well as provide the means to stay independent.
- Polio affected Children.
- Army Persons or Factory Workers.
The human muscle generate a very faint electrical signals whenever the muscle is contracted or relaxed. Signal processing is done to get information and reduce noise such as filtering ,rectification, thresholding. The electrodes on the surface of these muscle reads these signals. Surface Electrodes Silver chloride pre-gelled.To amplified and reduced noise. Arduino Uno will be used to prograam the servo motors. Servo Motors then acts as actuators to controll the movement of fingers. Voltage Regulators are used to prevent a situation in which a servo could be stalling and drawing a large amount of current from the battery.
