Project Summary

Gas leakage system is very important in today’s world. It helps in saving lives as well as properties of enormous number of people worldwide. Different types of gases are used in our daily-life. They are used in cars, homes and on industrial scale including homes as well as technical industries and automobiles. Every year multiple causalities are reported only in Pakistan in reference to DAWN News. These gases need to be managed as well as monitored through highly efficient resources otherwise, they might cause alarming harms to human lives as well as gas resources. It is noticed that due to gas leakage, dangerous accidents occur.

The Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), or propane, is a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases used as fuel in many applications like homes, hostels, industries, automobiles, and vehicles because of its desirable properties which include high calorific value, less smoke, less soot, and meager harm to the environment. Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) is highly inflammable and can burn even at some distance from the source of leakage. This energy source is primarily composed of propane and butane which are highly flammable chemical compounds. These gases can catch fire easily. In homes, LPG is used mainly for cooking purposes.

We are purposing an early gas leakage detection & alert system to minimize the damage due to sudden gas explosions. The gas leakage should be detected and controlled to protect people from danger. An odorant such as ethane thiol is added to LPG, so that leaks can be detected easily by most people. However, some people who have a reduced sense of smell may not be able to rely upon this inherent safety mechanism. A gas leakage detector becomes vital and helps to protect people from the dangers of gas leakage So, as a matter of disguise, we firmly aim to build up a cost efficient and effective gas leakage detection system to save human lives as well as the loss of gas reserves. Our system will consist of a device linking with the users’ phone through sim card. On detecting the gas, the device would immediately send notifications and call messages to user for 15 minutes and if the user doesn’t reply, the detection system will automatically turn off the main gas valve and will also be able to provide gas usage details on mobile app on regular basis. So, that user can trace its daily wage. The user will also be able to turn off or on the main gas valve through mobile app.

Project Objectives

Gas leakage detection system provide innovative ways to detect gas leaking in a certain area. The main objectives are:

1) To save the human life

2) To save Gas Reserves

3) To save expensive infrastructure & Assets

4) To digitalize the people

5) Using mobile app to control gas system such as  OFF /ON if the gas leakage is detected  we can control valve such as ON/OFF using app.

6) Monitor gas usage through mobile app and calculate the bill.

7) Generate alert messages or calls in the case of gas leakage.

Project Implementation Method

Overview:

For implementation of project, we would require software and hardware modules to work correspondingly. Semiconductor sensors are used to detect LPG gas. An MQ6 semiconductor sensor is used. Sensitive material of the MQ-6 gas sensor is SnO2, which has lower conductivity in clean air.

When the target combustible gas exists, the sensor conductivity increases along with the rising gas concentration. The MQ6 gas sensor has a high sensitivity to Propane, Butane and LPG, and response to Natural gas. The sensor could be used to detect different combustible gasses, especially Methane; it has a low-cost and is suitable for different applications. The MQ-6 can detect gas concentrations anywhere from 200 to 10,000 ppm. The sensor’s output is an analog resistance. This system is based on the Arduino UNO R3 and MQ-6 gas sensor. When the sensor detects gas in the atmosphere, it will give digital output 1 and if gas in not detected the sensor will give digital output 0. Arduino will receive the sensor output as digital input. If the sensor output is high, then the buzzer will start tuning along with the LCD that will show that “Gas detected: Yes”. If the sensor output is low then buzzer will not be tuning, and the LCD will show that “Gas detected: No”.

The buzzer most commonly consists of a number of switches or sensors connected to control unit that determines which button was pushed or whether a preset time has lapsed, and usually illuminates a light on the appreciate button or control panel, and sounds a warning in the form of a continuous or intermittent buzzing or beeping sound and send a message or call to users phone for 15 minutes and if user doesn’t take action, a call generated through AI voice will be directed to users phone. Moreover, the user will be able to on or off the gas valve and trace gas usage though a highly efficient mobile app. The device is portable, light weight, user friendly and efficient with multi-functional features.

Benefits of the Project

Following are the benefits of our project:

  1. When you install a gas detection system, you can continuously monitor the dangers in your environment. This becomes vital in the right commercial or industrial setting, where you have the potential for hazards everywhere.
  2.  In addition to purchasing a gas detection system, a risk assessment will normally be required to uncover the threats in both the unmanned and manned areas.
  3. It will be helpful in saving human lives by providing an extra ordinary environment for monitoring the gas leakage in atmosphere where there is a higher chance of explosion.
  4. It will digitalize the gas leakage system by offering a multi-channel mobile app to virtually control the system/device.
  5. It will monitor gas usage using an automated meter and generate a bill on regular basis.
  6. It will enable users to ON or OFF gas valve virtually.
  7. It will generate alert messages or calls in case of gas detection.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Final product will consist of a device comprising majorly on an application device, Arduino Uno R3, MQ-6 LPG gas sensor, 16*2 LCD, Buzzer 1, Male to male/female wire, 9 V Battery, Gas Lighter, 10 K Variable Resistor, Mini Breadboard, a sim card and a mobile phone.
