Project Summary

In this project, we are directed towards providing e-vanity, a smart mirror for fitting rooms in apparel industry. 

Smart mirrors are already being deployed in our everyday life in our bedrooms, living rooms and exercise sessions etc. Smart mirrors are future of IoT (internet of Things). We bring innovation in smart mirror by taking it into fitting rooms of apparel shops and personal wardrobes.

In today’s modern world, entertainment industry is ever growing and advancing field. There are new ways and technologies being adopted day by day by entrepreneurs to raise profit margins. But as there is more need of leisure, people are short of time as well. This affects shopping behavior as well. Shopping is important part of our lives. But as people are getting busy, physical shopping has been shifted to online shopping. 

In physically visiting outlets, more time and effort is required. Also, covid situations have long lasting effects on our mind in physically trying things out. Online shopping doesn’t give us full exposure and satisfaction in shopping as physically fitting rooms give us.

We are providing solution to this that can increase revenue many folds in entertainment and shopping industry. e-Vanity is a smart mirror that presents apparel items to user and virtually displays them on their body to give them experience of physically trying it on when actually, they hadn't even touched that item.

E-Vanity systems will be installed in apparel stores. Customers will come and access all the products that brand will be offering in one click away. They can click on any item they want. They can see themselves in the mirror and that product will be displayed on them virtually in real time.

Project Objectives

The main objectives/outcomes of this project are as follows:

  • To extend the smart mirrors from bedrooms, living rooms, rest rooms to fitting rooms and wardrobes as well.
  • To save time of both customers and salespersons.
  • To save the efforts of salesperson by giving ease in managing and displaying the accessories manually for incoming customers. 
  • To advance the shopping experience for customers to increase revenue of the businesses.
  • To cope with the difficulty of less storage and outlet areas of new ventures.
  • To deal with effects left by Covid as everybody is afraid of contagious diseases and spreading of it by coming in physical contact with things.  

Project Implementation Method

E-Vanity working model is presented with its hardware structure, backend software and a connected database. 

  • First, we worked on connecting camera (black and white) and detection of faces by using OpenCV.
  • Then we changed black and white camera images into color images.
  • We detected specific features of face to implement our functionality on it. In our project we detected eyes for glasses implementation and face shape for scarves implementation.
  • We inserted glasses and scarves from catalogue to our database (SQL) by editing them in Adobe Photoshop.
  • Then we created our interface (front end with which the user interacts) in python using visual studio.
  • We then assembled all our hardware products and attached the interface and database to it. Our working model is ready.

E-Vanity is a smart mirror which has two-way mirror in front connected to an LED screen at back. Two-way mirror works by showing us our reflection. LED screen presents all the information from database on interface visible on our mirror. Touch screen is incorporated in our project. We can access and monitor data by touching two-way mirror that sends commands to LED screen at the back. LED screen is connected to a database source. This can be a Laptop/PC/Arduino/Raspberry Pi. It contains all the database of that apparel store or your personal wardrobe. A camera is used in front to detect and capture images.

Retail store administrator or a person as a user login to the product by giving its username and password. He will then edit (in Adobe Photoshop or other software) all the items in their inventory that they want to display to their customers or for their personal use and then add it to the database. 

The incoming customer will come in front of the mirror. He will select any option from the given accessories (in this project case glasses or scarves). The list of glasses or scarves available for that brand will appear in front of him. He can go through it and select any item he likes from that catalogue. As soon as he clicks any item, he can see his reflection in the mirror with that item (glasses/scarf) virtually superimposed on him in real time. He can experience it like he is physically wearing that glasses or scarf in real world.

If he likes that item, he can select it to buy it otherwise can try other items in same way.

Benefits of the Project

This project covers a lot of applications in industrial area and personal use, but some of the major benefits for which the project was made for are as follows:

  • Now-a-days, there is problem of short storage space and less space for outlets for displaying of every item on shelves. Also, trying rooms requires a lot more space. E-Vanity doesn’t need any large space and area to accommodate. Items don’t need to be place at shelves for display not covering much area and no fitting rooms required. This mirror displays all the items available in stock and virtually you can try things on.
  • Different products may be available at different geographical locations of the same brand. E-vanity provides you all the items under one name/brand at one place that you can access from any remote area.
  • Trying out same items by different people at store is not encouraged now-a-days. Due to covid situation, there’s fear in people's heart about spreading of contagious diseases from physical contact that is affecting businesses. E-Vanity provides a solution as you don’t need to touch any item but still can enjoy the old experience.
  • The salespersons and working staff at any shop had to work hard in managing and displaying items in shelves for each upcoming customer. E-vanity will save their efforts that were wasted otherwise in manual process.
  • Selecting from limited stock available and trying things on manually requires a lot of time. As much time saved as possible is required in this era. E-vanity saves your time both as customer and salesperson.
  • People look for more and more advanced and innovative ways for their entertainment. E-Vanity’s addition to apparel market will increase profit margins to manifolds.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverables of my project are:

Hardware

e-Vanity Product:

It is a smart mirror virtually displaying glasses and scarves on human faces in real time with following components:

  • Two-way mirror:

It is a mirror with one side showing you your reflection and other side is transparent showing you display of LED screen attached behind it.

  • LED screen behind two-way mirror:

It is of size 24 cm which displays user interface with all the information/data specific to apparel shop connected to backend and database. It is created in Python language on PyCharm with OpenCV functionalities. 

  • PC/Raspberry Pi for database:

SQL is used here to create database of the e-Vanity. It is then connected to user interface. 

  • Frame

It is made up of wood covering mirror sides to give a good finishing look and avoiding any accidents by mirror cutting.
