Project Summary

‘Dry-Aware, as the name signifies, is about changing the public perception of the value of water, prompting governments and companies to view clean water not as a commodity to exploit but as a precious resource. Our goal is to construct a system/ scheme that uses a digital water meter that utilizes IoT and ultrasonic technologies to monitor and track the end users water usage patterns both holistically and at specified time periods. This will allow the user to keep track of his bill and footprint on society. Our mission is to ensure that major water users such as the economically privileged and the business community be able to track their usage of water so that they can make their businesses and daily affairs more effective and reduce the burden on society to create more dams and try to produce more water. The idea revolves around three modules named; Research, Software, and Hardware.

Project Objectives

Water is a scarce resource in Pakistan and it is expected that we might not be able to sustain our basic needs of it by 2025. Not only is water badly contained or stored but it is also poorly distributed such that the rich and powerful hold the monopoly over water distribution and the poor get none for their families. It is a need of the hour to make the rich accountable for their reckless use of this precious resource and to provide the government with a means to check and appropriately tax those who do not change their misuse of water.
The main objectives of our proposed system are as follows:
1. Monitoring water consumption in an efficient way.
2. Providing a (smart) technology/system for water consumption measuring and processing.
3. Reducing human time, effort and resources involved in the various method of water wastage reduction such as water recycling, water-storing infrastructure, water management, water reclaiming & controlling pollution and better sewage treatment.
4. Transforming concept, attitude and all forms of consumption, from individual use to industries.
5. Resulting in not only more awareness but less water scarcity. Ergo, clean water available to generations to come.

Project Implementation Method

Requirements Implementation
Should monitor the water flow through the main pipe.  A water meter is used.
Should send the data acquired to the cloud.  Used raspberry pie and GSM module; using the internet connection we sent the data to the cloud server/ storage.
Should be able to retrieve the data from the cloud.  Mobile app will be able to retrieve data from the cloud using mobile-data or Wi-Fi connectivity.
Should be able to formulate the average consumption of the household.

This calculation will be done in the cloud server or it may be offloaded to the microprocessor or the application.

Mobile application. Made by android studio and its extensions.
Define a threshold (can be fixed or chosen by the user from options) and according to that decide whether that particular house is saving or wasting (programming).

This calculation will be done on the cloud server.

According to that threshold and the formula (research or made), provide message per day that is motivational or using positive and negative reinforcements (programming). Using data from the cloud the application will compare consumption to the threshold and provide relevant messages.
Water consumption by the user will be reset after 24hrs. 

The mobile application will carry out this step.

Warning (default e.g. 80 or choose an option).

 Mobile application will compare the water consumption to the threshold and when it increases then a warning notification/ message will be shown/sent.

Users can generate reports according to their desired timeline. 

Mobile application will send the command to the cloud then the server will generate the report and then send it back to the mobile application to show.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The project's implementation consists of two parts. The first utilizes a digital meter which may be constructed or bought online. The second part involves taking data from it and utilizing IOT technology to transfer data across the home Wi-Fi connection and display it on mobile interfaces of the end-user. Raspberry Pi will be used in that end to take data from the device and use a Wi-Fi connection to upload usage data to the cloud. The mobile app will then take this data from the cloud and display it to the user.

The use of ultrasonic technology is due to the fact that even though mechanical implementations are cheaper in the short run, they are far more susceptible to wear and tear and inaccuracies when particles or objects pass through them and therefore not sustainable in the long run.
The monitoring technology will consist of a mobile interface that will not only keep track of water usage patterns but will also raise awareness of water shortage and give tips to reduce water use. The app will also prompt the end-user when usage limits are crossed and try to guilt the user into wasting less water.
