DrowsyAlarm
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryOne of the major cause of road accidents are the drowsiness of the driver and their distraction from the driving. The term drowsy means the feeling of falling asleep due to fatigue. From various studies it was estimated that drowsy driving was responsible for 72,000 crashes, 44,000 injuries, and 800 deaths in 2013. However, it was predicted that this number may increase up to 6,000 fatal crashes each year which will be cause by the drowsy drivers.
In order to avoid that huge number of dangerous road accidents there must be a reliable and robust system that in advance predict the unsafe driving of the drivers and alert them earlier and can contribute in safe driving. This system must contain the two phases one is the monitoring phase in which the system monitor the driver’s physical changes and the other is the prediction for the early prediction of drowsiness.
Project Objectives- To monitor the heart-rate and detect the level of drowsiness.
- To inform the driver if he/she is feeling drowsy through alarm.
- If the driver is unable to turn the alarm off for a few minutes then an emergency message will be send to emergency contacts or NHA (National Highway Authority).
Implementation of this project is that the device will continuously monitor the heart rate of drivers with the help of PPG sensor attached in a band and then send signals to the mobile app connected with the band through Bluetooth module, if heart-rate decreases rapidly it means the driver is feeling drowsy then the app will generate alarm and the vibrator in band will start vibrating to wake him/her up
The drowsiness monitoring system use sensors in smart band. The sensors can measure the heart rate to detect the level of drowsiness and fatigue and can alarm the driver if his/her heart-rate crosses the given threshold. This device detects if the drivers heart-rate is decreasing rapidly and crosses its threshold then it will try to wake up the driver with a strong vibration. If the driver will unable to wake-up then the system will send an emergency alert message to NHA.
Benefits of the Project- To develop drowsy alarm system for long route drivers
- To help community by providing a solution which could help in avoiding road accidents
- To apply theoretical concepts of problem solving in real life
A wearable device that is consist of PPG sensor to monitor heart-rate, arduino for processing and bluetooth module for connectivity with the android app
