Project Summary

Drowsy driving is one of the biggest road problems of every country, including Pakistan. Every year, lack of attention to driving and road rules cause a majority of the accidents and claims numerous lives. Since drivers who are drowsy in the condition often do not take any actions which are avoidable prior to a collision.  On June 8, 2011, a bus accident was caused because of a tired bus driver who fell asleep while driving near Ormara, Balochistan. It has been estimated that 52 percent men and 30 percent women fall asleep while driving. According to Forbes report, an estimated 5000 lives lost in just USA by drowsy driving, at an annual cost of something like $109 billion. The AAA (American Automobile Association) says that 20% of all fatal accident in the USA are due to drowsiness. We will propose a system that will detect the drowsiness of the driver and inform the near police station and also handle the situation in case of accident and minimize the causalities.

Another factor for road accident is rash driving. Rash driving is defined as a mental state in which the driver displays a wanton disregard for the rules of the road. The driver misjudges the common driving rules & procedures. Number of accidents caused by impairment of alertness in vehicle drivers pose a serious danger to people, not only the drivers who are driving their vehicle but also to the general public pose a serious threat due to unsafe driving. System that will check an abnormal behavior of a driver i.e. weaving, swerving, slide slippery, fast reversion and sudden braking.

Project Objectives

In order to prevent accidents from happening and to handle the situation after the accident. The objectives of the study are:

  • To develop a nonintrusive system which can detect drowsy state of the driver and rash driving and issue a warning.
  • After drowsiness or rash driving is detected buzzer will be on or immediately contact concerned authority.
  • To also check whenever the accident happens will notify immediately to the numbers provided in application by the end user and therefore people in the car can get service as early as possible by minimizing the casualties.

Our concern here is not only the high crash rate related to drunk driving, rash driving or drowsiness during driving but also the after effect of these types of crashes that devastate life of people entirely. Careless driving not only poses an immense risk to public safety and health, it also impose a heavy financial burden on the whole society, especially on the healthcare sector.

Project Implementation Method

It's an Android Application to detect drowsiness of driver and Rash driving:

Drowsy Driving:

A Drowsy Driving Warning and Traffic collision Information System will consists of following methodology:

  • Drowsy driving warning system will be implementing on smartphone with the help of image processing algorithm.
  • Driver`s face expression such as eye blinking , mouth position will continuously monitor by smartphone camera .If the driver face expressions match with drowsy parameter then smartphone will alert the driver.
  • For emergency situation, driver can call for medical assistance by speaking “help” so smartphone will detect this command and will send help message to emergency help line with its current location.
  • Use GPS and GSM system to track the driver.

Traffic collision will detect by impact measuring sensor. The main criterion of this system is that this system must be non-intrusive and system should start when the vehicle is turned on and driver should not able to turn on/off the device. And use GPS and GSM system to track the driver.

Rash Driving:

GPS and speed limit are used to see the behavior of driver and detect if he/she is driving reckless. Then give him warning and inform the nearest police station.

The mobile phone that is placed within the vehicle capture the image of driver, also to detect the behavior of the driver and analyzes the information from its accelerometer sensors to observe any abnormal and sends a message for help.
