Virtual Patient Simulators (VPS) is a technology that allow users to immerse into an illusionary artificial world. A trainee can freely interconnect with virtual patients and virtual surroundings by navigating through a 3D virtual environment. VPS provides repetitive training and incorporation of medical workflows. A realistic three dimensional training for medicine can be conducted by the use of Virtual Patient Simulator (VPS) in which there is a use of 3D patients and extensive VR technologies. Plenteous studies have shown that the training conducted on VPS helps in reducing the training time for a beginner by half. The Virtual Reality Patient Simulator will be a computerbased, interactive virtual reality program. The simulator will be built using standard VR development tools and applications. The virtual environments help the trainee students to practice and rehearse for multiple times in an environment where there is a minimum risk factor. VPS primary goal is to enable students to work on their rigorous decision making skills without the fear of harming patients. 

Project Objectives

To create patient simulator for medical science students and residents using virtual environment.   

Project Implementation Method

Implementation of the project is divided into 4 steps or phases:

1)Investigation 2)Diagonsis 3)Medical aid 4)Accuracy Report

1) INVESTIGATION:
In this scene the patient will arrive in the emergency room and the doctor will examine him/her. Then the doctor will investigate the patient about his health.  The investigation will be based upon the questionnaire that is followed globally and the trainer’s training will be judged according to the questions that he will ask in the questions available to him. Also the doctor will take the patient blood test and then the samples will be sent in the laboratory on which the tests would be done.

2) DIAGNOSIS:
Also the doctor will take the patient’s blood test and then the samples will be sent in the laboratory on which the tests would be done. Then according to the reports the doctor will diagnose the patient’s actual issue and then will move forward to the medical aid 


3)MEDICAL AID :
In this scene the patient will be given treatment according to the medical diagnosis that came in result from the investigation and diagnosis scenes. 


4) ACCURACY REPORT:
Accuracy report will be generated on the basis of his performance from the previous three scenes.  
 

Benefits of the Project

VPS offers numerous advantages over traditional medical training:
1) VPS is time-efficient and cost-effective strategy of developing decision-making skills in trainee.
2)A trainee can practice over same virtual patient several times as compare to real-life patients.
3) Repetitive Training in a safe environment without risking the life of patient.
4)Trainee can explore different cases and different outcomes.
5)Virtual patients are accessible anywhere and at anytime, and no extra cost is required when doing modification in software.
6)Trainee can make mistake and explore implications of those mistake.
7) With VPS, trainee is able to learn decision-making skills more efficiently. It offers opportunities to help students in enhancing their learning in the most innovative ways.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final output would be a 3D virtual environment in which trainee can interact with patient using Oculus headset and controllers. A patient of any random case would come up and trainee has to investigate, diagnose and provide medical aid to patient. The accuracy report would be generated of his performance.
