High Gain Hexagonal Shaped Patch Antenna Array for Ground Penetrating Radar
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryA ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system is used to detect objects underground. These objects can belong to any type of material, i.e., metal, plastic pipeline, and landmines, etc. This system mainly consists of four parts, i.e. RF source, amplifier, receiver and transmitter antennas, and signal processing part. One of its components, i.e. antenna pair is the most critical part of this system on which the system’s performance depends. So in this final year project, an efficient antenna would be developed for GPR using microstrip antennas.
Project ObjectivesThis project aims’ to design, simulate, and develop a high gain, compact, and mechanically robust
microstrip antenna array for GPR applications. The resonant frequency would be kept in between 700 MHZ -3000 MHZ.
1) A microstrip antenna array will be designed.
2) A hexagonal patch would be used for the antenna array.
3) Boards of the different dielectric constant would be tried, i.e., FR-4, RO 3003, RT-5880.
4) A corporate fed network would be used for connecting patches with each other.
5) CST Microwave Studio would be used for simulation.
Benefits of the ProjectThe antennas which will be developed in this project can be used for GPR. That GPR system has many benefits including:
1) Military Applications
In the military, this system can be used for landmines detection efficiently.
2) Civil Engineering Applications
In civil engineering, this system can be used for non-destructive detection.
3) Architecture
This system can be used for the detection of architectural objects underground.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe scope of this project mainly includes designing of high gain antennas for GPR applications. By the end of
this project, a corporate-fed array of hexagonal-shaped patch antennas will be delivered. It is expected, that
an improved performance with better resolution will be achieved by the proposed antennas.
