Project Title

Development of standalone multi solar energy harvesting system with RDC MLI by implementing FPGA

Project Area of Specialization

Electrical/Electronic Engineering

Project Summary

As the world is paying attention on the solar system for electricity generation multilevel inverters are also getting attention due to advancement in power electronics. This project introduces a standalone multi solar energy harvesting system with reduced device count multilevel inverter by implementing FPGA. The system consist solar module or panels, DC-DC converter, reduced device count multilevel inverter. Standalone multi solar energy harvesting system is a utility power alternate. The solar light energy is harvesting by using solar panels and converted into electrical energy. There is P&O maximum power point tracking technique is used, which is used to indirectly increase the efficiency of PV panels. The DC-DC converter steps down and regulate the magnitude of the harvested voltage  and supplied to the reduced device count multilevel inverter. DC voltage can be converted into AC voltage  by using RDC MLI and supplied to load. The FPGA ( field programmable gate array) is used for switching control of power semiconductor switches (IGBTs) in RDC MLI.

Project Objectives

The objectives of this project are:

  • Generate the code of programing language for seven-level cascaded H-bridge MLI with reduced device count by FPGA.
  • Using the perturb and observe method (P&O) for MPPT to improve the efficiency of the standalone solar energy harvesting system.
  • Develop the standalone multi solar energy harvesting system with RDC MLI by implementing FPGA.
  • Performance analysis of the hardware.

Project Implementation Method

The focus of this project is to construct a compact and affordable standalone multi solar energy harvesting system with reduced device count multilevel inverter by implementing FPGA. Many lifestyles and applications require standalone multi solar energy harvesting system with RDC MLI due to insufficiency or absence of any kind of energy grid. These involve remote settlements, household, solar cars, aircraft, hospitals, industries, agriculture, educational institutes, and many more.

Benefits of the Project

Benefits of the project are:

  • Harvesting the solar energy provide clean, free and sustainable form of renewable energy.
  • Standalone multi solar energy harvesting system reduces the energy crises in remote areas that are not easily accessible to an electric grid and provide the full time electricity.
  • Standalone multi solar energy harvesting system boosts the electricity independence. Consumers can easily protect themselves against unpredictable increases in utility prices, and enjoy cheap electricity.
  • By Using RDC MLI the system will be reduce in size of hardware, cost with more efficiency.
  • Standalone multi solar energy harvesting system with reduced device count multilevel inverter is the way of providing and harvesting solar energy with more affordably, effectively and efficiently.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In project prototype, module consists PV panels, DC-DC converter, MPPT, seven-Level Cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter with reduced device count, and FPGA. The standalone multi solar energy harvesting system with reduced device count multilevel inverter by implementing FPGA is developed with multi solar PV panels, they are used as individual isolated DC sources. DC-DC converter with perturb and observation method are used to implement maximum power point tracking at each solar PV panel and followed by reduced device count multilevel inverter. IGBTs are used as a power semiconductor switches for RDC MLI, switching control algorithm is implemented in FPGA for RDC MLI.
