Development of Infusion System for Controlled Drug Delivery
Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject SummaryAn infusion pump are medical devices that are used to deliver therapeutic fluids which can be either medication or nutrients into patient's body in controlled amount. They are widely used in clinical settings such as hospitals, nursing homes etc. While surveying the hospitals, we have observed that three different brands of infusion pump (Nipro, B-Brawn and Mindray) have been taking over our medical setup. So far there is no any manufacturing in Pakistan to replace these brands. As a biomedical engineer we will design the infusion pump which would be indigenous, cost-effective and easily used in the hospitals and homes. This infusion system comprises of parameters that includes volume capacity, flow rate and infusion time. These parameters connecting together will help the doctors to provide a precise control drug delivery in the patient’s body. The device will be able to get input parameters from the end user and will deliver drug/medicine to the patient with the help of syringe forwarded through the motors mounted on the mechanical assembly that. These all parameters will be display on LCD attached to the infusion system. The following figure shows the block diagram paradigm of the device.

The aim of this design and development of Infusion System for Controlled Drug Delivery. The objective of project includes the design and development of the following:
- Design of Device.
- Volume Capacity.
- Flow Rate.
- Infusion Time.
- Alarm.
- Battery Backup.
- Simulation of the parameters
- Design of Mechanical Assembly.
- Design of Electronic Assembly.
- Selection of Electronic Components.
- Fabrication of Electro-Mechanical Assembly.
- Testing.
The project benefit includes the following.
- This project is aimed towards eventually lowering the hospital loads during the COVID-19 pandemic by manufacturing batch production of infusion system devices.
- User friendly health device.
- Low cost device.
- Indigenous design.
- Benefit for Pakistan Health care Industry and society.
