Development of Assisted Device for Adhesive capsulitis

Project Area of Specialization

Biomedical Engineering

Project Summary

Adhesive Capsulitis is a common shoulder disorder that causes inflammation of the shoulder capsule and restrictions in the range of motion of the shoulder joint or sometimes complete loss of passive and active external rotation of the shoulder and stiffness. These complications limit the movement of the shoulder joint that affects the activities of daily living. Therefore an assisted device is required that will help to rehabilitate the recovery of Adhesive Capsulitis. Currently, it is being treated with continuous physiotherapy sessions and via invasive methods. The patient may skip their therapy sessions due to money or time and may not go for invasive methods due to certain reasons. Therefore, we intend to design a wearable assistive device that helps to improve range of motion without the need of any physiotherapist. The patient will be able to get his therapy at his home without the help of any other individual. The assisted device with the indigenous design will perform two Degree of Freedom (DOF) for the shoulder joint. This Degree of Freedom (DOF) will be operated through a control panel which will provide the adjustment of time and speed with low, medium, and fast modes. Further, this control panel also has separate two Degree of freedom modes. The following figure shows the block diagram of the device.

Project Objectives

Adhesive Capsulitis is a disorder with a compromised range of motion and stiffness and limits the movement of the shoulder that affects the activity of daily living.  Therefore, a self-sufficient assisted device is required that will help in continuous assistive therapy of Adhesive Capsulitis. The objectives of the project include;

1.  Three modes of motion - Slow, Medium, Fast

       2.  Timer -Programmed timer for controlled therapy

        3.  Angle – Controlled 3-Dimensional rotation.

Project Implementation Method

  • Design of mechanical assembly.
  • Selection of electronic components
  • Motors and drive circuits
  • Controller
  • Design of electronic assembly.
  • Fabrication of electro-mechanical assembly
  • Testing

Benefits of the Project

The project benefit includes the following.

  • The proposed project will help the patients with Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder) to treat their disorder without the assistance of any therapist.
  • The modes will help them to control the intensity of therapy, the timer will control the duration of therapy, and angle sensors will help in providing the 3-dimensional controlled movement.
  • Low-cost device
  • Indigenous design.

Benefit for Pakistan Health care Industry and society.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Adhesive Capsulitis is a disorder with a compromised range of motion and stiffness and limits the movement of the shoulder that affects the activity of daily living. Therefore a self-sufficient assisted device is required that will help in continuous assistive therapy of Adhesive Capsulitis. In this project, the assisted device is fabricated for two degrees of freedom that comprise the mechanical and electrical assembly. The mechanical assembly contains arm assembly which would be made up of metal, (aluminum or steel), and an armband with a belt, which would support arm assembly. On the other hand, in electrical assembly, we are intended to use angle and force sensors, which would detect compromised force exerted by the patient. The motor will exert further force to achieve the required angle. The microcontroller will be used to program forces are angle requirements. The device design is provided by Graphical User Interface (GUI). GUI consists of time console and modes for speed along with selection modes for shoulder joint two degrees of freedom
