 Project Summary:

stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts (or ruptures). Stroke is the second leading cause of death and a major cause of disability worldwide. Over 80% of stroke survivors live with residual gait impairments. Post-stroke patients suffers from muscular weakness of their ankle joints, which induces degradation of propulsion force and reduced clearance during the swing phase due to foot-drop. Asymmetry in leg movements, muscle fatigues, and the risk of falls during walking. A long-term treatment is necessary causing physical, economical, and mental costs.

Existing solution:

A plastic ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) is used to improve the alignment of the ankle joint, increasing the walking speed and reducing the energy consumption during walking.

Limitations:

  1. AFO permits only limited ankle motions
  2. Zero degree of freedom
  3. Different from normal walking gait.
  4. Limited due to its high cost and bulkiness.

Proposed solution

  1. Design of Low-Cost Ankle-Foot Orthosis for Post-Stroke Patients
  2. Features:
    • Lightweight
    • Flexible material with minimal Slippage
    • Designing and manufacturing at local level to empower local industry
Project Objectives

Project Objectives:

  1. Design of Low-Cost Ankle-Foot Orthosis for Post-Stroke Patients
  2. Features:
    • Lightweight
    • Flexible material with minimal Slippage
    • Designing and manufacturing at local level to empower local industry
Project Implementation Method

Implementation Steps:

  1. Design of Orthosis using Flexible Material
  2. Motor Controller and Gait Sensing Module

  3. Motion Analysis

  4. Result formation

Benefits of the Project

Existing solution has some limitations:

  1. It permits only limited ankle motions
  2. Zero degree of freedom
  3. Different from normal walking gait
  4. Limited due to its high cost and bulkiness

Benefits:

We are Designing Low-Cost Ankle Foot Orthosis for Post-Stroke Patients with some unique features. Our othosis will be Lightweight, made up of Flexible material. We will regulate its Designing and manufacturing at local level to empower local industry.
