Designing of a Laptop Based Radar

Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject Summary

As the name suggests, frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar is a technique for obtaining range information from a radar by frequency modulating a
continuous signal. The technique has a very long history, but in the past its use has been limited to certain applications, such as radio altimeters. However, there is now renewed
interest in the technique for three main reasons, [3]. First, the most general advantage possessed by FMCW radar is that the modulation is readily compatible with a wide variety of solid-state transmitters. Second, the frequency measurement which must be performed to obtain range measurement from such a system can now be performed digitally, for example, using a processor based on the fast Fourier transform (FFT).

Benefits of FMCW over other modulated CW waveforms are: 1) the ability to control the range and to obtain very efficient use of the spectrum; 2) the ease with which the range resolution can be changed, and the way in which very high range resolutions can be obtained without requiring wide IF and video bandwidths.

Project Objectives

The objective is to design a continous wave frequency modulated radar which can detect target at certain distance(fmcw are usually short range radar)  and distinguish between moving and static targets. Moreover, it can distinguish between two close targets(high range resolution).

The objective is to make it cost efficient and more efficient in performance through digital signal processing and programming.

Project Implementation Method

It starts with the design of a homodyne receiver and a transmitter to generate and transmit our desired modulated frequency. The VCO is used to generate the EM waves which is then feed to the splitter and then to the antenna which radiates it.

The receiver thus receives the echo signal, amplfy it with the first  components in the receiver, the low noise amplifer.

the signal is then converted to intermediate frequecy for futher processing using splitter and mixers in the transmitter and receiver individually.

The intermediate frequency is further processed by feeding it to the low pass fiter and amplfier and then to the A/D coverter for digital signal processing. The matlab is then used to apply FFT and extract the range and velocity information out of it.

Benefits of the Project

FMCW (Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave) radar is one kind of HF (High Frequency) radar. By using of FMCW radar, we can measure vertical drift velocity (and virtual height) of moving target and measure range of target or object with high resolution.

A range estimation method for FMCW level radar has many advantages.

As a non-contact distance measurement system, that has
many advantages surmount other systems in hazardous environment or hard conditions. Owing to its unique features, FMCW radar is often employed where high range measurement resolution and accuracy is demanded.

Car Collision Avoidance System, that is another principal in FMCW radar application field, Is can be one important part of Intelligent Traffic System (ITS), Autonomous Intelligent Cruise Control (AICC) system in safeguard highway traffic security is very important part. In the AICC system, that will
use the FMCW radar system to measure range and velocity of the vehicle, and control distance between vehicle and front vehicle by using vehicles’ accelerator and the brake. Thus achieves the gold of securable drive.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The radar is designed to  have a range of 20 to 50 meter with the the aim to minimize the range resolution  below 10cm.

It works at a central frequency of 10.5GHz with a bandwidth of 3GHZ. As its a short range radar it does not need high power  transmit,so the power used is approximatly  23dBm.i.e less than 10 Watt.

It has two mode.Doppler and range. In doppler mode it can detect the velocity and range of a moving targets and in range it determines the range of a static target.
