Project Title

Designing CFT and CFD of JF-17 Thunder

Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject Summary

Until now, our group has worked tirelessly to first generate the geometry of JF-17 Thunder in CATIA. Once the geometry model had been completed after hours of hard work we moved on to its cleaning. Space claim was used to clean and smooth the geometry out. After the cleaning, we imported the geometry to ICEM and worked day and night to make a smooth mesh on the geometry and to make the domain around it. With utmost care and precision, we finally generated a mesh optimum enough to capture the boundary layer. Once satisfied with the mesh generation, we imported our mesh in ANSYS FLUENT and set up our case. Setting up the case and the boundary conditions with extreme precaution we initialized our case calculations. With our calculations running at one end, we decided to make use of the time we had in our hands and started working on the designing of CFTs. Keeping the CFTs of F-16 as a reference we made an initial model and are now working on its refinement to satisfy the objectives we set. Right now we are satisfying our objective of 40% fuel capacity of CFTs. We are designing it in such a way that the CFTs carry additional 40% fuel.

Project Objectives

JF-17 Thunder is the backbone of the Pakistan Air Force. It not only defends but also works for the economy of our country. The operations to work for the betterment of the Bird are hence of prior importance. So, we chose this topic to enhance the performance of JF-17 with the addition of Conformal Fuel Tanks. As JF-17 Thunder never flies in combat without multiple external fuel tanks, which ultimately hinder the jet’s performance, CFTs become an optimum choice for its increased performance.

Project Implementation Method

JF-17 Thunder has always been the pride of Pakistan. It is an honor to work for the betterment and the enhancement of the bird. The benefits as stated earlier will indeed make the Bird a fighter aircraft second to none. So what we are doing is the construction of an ideal CFT that can be implemented on the Thunder. The CFTs attached once implemented on the Bird will not only enhance the fuel volume but also help in making it more aerodynamically clean and efficient. With an increased range and endurance we believe that the implementation of our project CFTs will indeed lead to the new level of achievement of The Bird that would be second to none.
