Design of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine using low speed Axial Flux Halbach Permanent Magnet Generator
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummarySummary of the project:
This project is about the design of a hardware system that uses an H-Darreius vertical axis wind turbine along with an axial flux permanent magnet generator for the generation of output power at very low input revolution per minute of rotor due to low turbulent wind speed. Moreover, the output voltages will be rectified and fed to a 14-volt battery. The expected output DC voltages from the generator are 21 volts theoretically but in actual hardware, there might be voltage drops so it may be closer to 14 volts for charging the battery.
In order to increase the flux density across the stator coils, the Halbach arrangement of magnets is used on the rotor which enhances the magnetic flux density in a certain region. This increase in flux would produce the desire power at the very low-speed rotation of the rotor.
This hardware will operate between wind speeds of 3m/s to 6.45m/s and the expected output power and voltage are 80 watts and 21 dc voltage. In addition, this system is portable, compact in size, and low in weight, which makes it easily instalable in rural areas where turbulent air is present.; therefore, green and clean energy can be harnessed by this system as the wind energy will be stored in the battery and no carbon and hazardous gases emission occur. This battery will be used for the electricity purpose for the homes of people living in rural areas.
Project ObjectivesThe objectives are:
1) To design an axial flux generator that works for a wind speed of 3m/s to 6.45m/s.
2)To use the Halbach arrangement of neodymium magnets on rotor plates.
3)To design H-darrieus wind turbine that works for a wind speed of 3m/s to 6.45m/s.
4)To connect a battery at the output of the generator through a rectifier.
5)To generate 21 volts at the rectified output to charge the battery.
6)To design a compact size generator.
Project Implementation MethodThe project will be implemented like this:
1) Initially, The necessary calculations for the design of H-darrieus vertical axis wind turbine and axial flux permanent magnet will be done.
2) Second, after calculations the system model will be implemented on MATLAB Simulink and it will be simulated to check its working and results will be generated.
3)Third, after simulation the hardware will be designed and a prototype of the system will be made.
4)In the end, the prototype will be tested, and its result will be compared with the simulated results of MATLAB.
Benefits of the ProjectThe benefits of the project:
1) Safe and Clean energy
2) Renewable source of energy
3) It can be easily interconnected with other renewable energy sources.
4) It can be used as a brushless dc motor.
5) It can be used in low input current high thrust quadcopters and electric planes.
6) It can be easily manufactured without too much cost.
7) No carbon or hazardous emission of gases.
8) It can be easily installed on the rooftops or in the areas where good turbulent air flows through the land.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe technical deliverables are:
1) The turbine will operate between a wind speed of 3m/s to 6.45 m/s.
2) The rating of the axial flux generator is 200 Watts.
3) The maximum expected output power is 80 watts at 6.45m/s
4) The output voltages will be about 21 volts after 400 RPM.
5) A 12 volts battery will be charged at the output.
6) The stored energy in the batteries will be used for electrification.
