Design of smart water meter
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryWe want to make a smart water meter for water metering purpose and then implementing this for water billing purpose ensuring "billing on usage basis". We would harvest energy from water flow and then utilize this energy for powering our microcontroller board and some communication module for data transmission of water usage wirelessly for metering purpose. This project is basically an IOT project. We aim to utilize energy harvesters in this meter to avoid fast discharging of batteries and making this product self-powered using energy harvesting techniques. We would utilize rechargeable batteries to store this energy and to support our sesors nodes and MCU . At the end this flowrate data for water usage could be sent to some dashboard/cloud using communication module on some dedicaed website, this data could be used then for water billing and thus water metering can be assured.
Project ObjectivesOur projects prime objective includes water metering for water billing purpose so that each user could be charged on his/her usage of water. A low cost water meter is aimed for ease of access and implementation for everyone. Reducing manpower for billing requirements, and utliizning IOT for data transmission of water usage. Conservation of water resources is our prime objective to be ensured by minimizing water unfair use. Water leakage detection can also be ensured by measuring passed flow at different nodes of pipelines. A sustainable product fabrication is desired for its long life.
Project Implementation Method- First energy harvesting mechanism is to be developed by designing a turbine or utlizing other possible techniques for harvesting minimum energy required for our IOT solution.
- Energy harvesting devices available in the market would be utilized to ensure low cost and effectiveness of our product.
- Then appropiate electronics devices such as sensor nodes and micro controller board will be searched out in the market to ensure low cost low power usage and ensuring wireless communication.
- After selection of IOT products, we would go to testing and finalization of our product.
- A feasible website for cloud communication would be selected for data communication.
- Finally billing system or software system could be generated for acheiving project objective.
- Low cost product
- IOT based product
- Billing based on water usage.
- Conservation of water resources
- Minimizing unfair water usage
- Reducing man power for biling
- Website for data reading for water organization
- Finally Billing of water.
- Installation of water meter on residential scale for 1 to 0.5 inch for water pipes and in some industrial applications.
- Microcontroller board and sensor node installation such as Aurdino UNO and ESP 32 (Selection may change depending upon research)
- Assembling of energy harvesters with IOT hub using power management system.
- Testing and experimentation in our department laboratories.
- Finally data accumulation on websit for cloud accumulation and acheiving billing needs.
