Project Title

Design of Reduced Device Count Multilevel Inverter by using Multicarrier PWM technique

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

In last few years multilevel inverters have brought the revolution to the industry and research. The multilevel inverters provide the number of levels in the output, which results in smoother waveform that contains less number of harmonics as compared to the traditional inverters. While classical topologies of multilevel inverters have proved to be viable alternative in a wide range of high power medium voltage level applications.  As the name suggests multi levels of the output voltage are obtained and as the number of levels increases the waveform becomes smoother but on the same time use of semiconductor devices and other equipment increases.

The use of semiconductor devices make the inverter efficient but the vast utilization of high power medium voltage rated switches require protection scheme, gate driver portion and heat sink, thus the overall system becomes complex and voluminous. Thus a multilevel inverter with reduced number of devices is seeking the attention of researchers as it offers immense advantages over other classical topologies  In this project a reduced device count multilevel inverter will be designed. The design of the inverter will use the control  through  multi carrier pulse width modulation (PWM)  techniques. These PWM techniques offer the advantage of utilization of less number of switches for the effective and distortion free conversion of DC to AC.

Project Objectives

The reduced device count multilevel inverter by using multicarrier pulse width modulation techniques will be designed within the given timeline and the key objectives for this design are:

Project Implementation Method Benefits of the Project

Nowadays, the concentration of power generation is moving towards the pollution free and environment friendly sources. The major renewable sources solar, fuel cell and offshore wind turbines are producing dc power, but the national grid supplies AC power, and the loads which we normally use are alternating, therefore the DC power produced must be effectively converted  into AC economically. The designed multilevel inverter has superiority over other conventional inverters, as well as over the current present multilevel inverters, as it provides the output near to the sinusoidal waveform, thus the transformer can also be utilized safely to step up or down the voltage level as the voltage waveform is nearer to sine wave. The harmonics issues will also be very less as compared, to the conventional inverters. The designed project can be widely utilized in industries, as the majority of industries use induction motors, which must be fed continuously from the AC voltage source, and the designed project will prove to be, much economical so that it can also be used for domestic loads, at homes.
