Project Objectives

Our objective is to design a centrifugal compressor which achieves the maximum efficiency at the desired parameters. This objective of our project follows a set of targeted objectives that will be achieved in the process.

The pressure ratio is to be achieved from 1.2 to 1.5. The exhaust velocity of the compressor is set to be more than 250 m/s. The modeling of the compressor will be done in CAD software.

The second major objective is to verify the model design using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Analysis through CFD is a major part of our project design step and features software like Ansys.

Project Implementation Method

The model is objectively set to be statically and structurally integral and should conform to the operating conditions under all general environmental conditions and stresses using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Finite element analysis uses equivalent integral approach to divide the overall structure into many elements and analyze a structure using the meshing of elements and calculation of forces and deflections of each element.

Apart from the design parameters, we have an objective to make the process of design of centrifugal compressor to be easy to do rather than a complex procedure of designing.

Benefits of the Project

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been extensively used in centrifugal compressor design. CFD provides further optimization opportunities for the compressor design rather than designing the centrifugal compressor. The experience-based design process still plays an important role for new compressor developments.The centrifugal (radial flow) compressor is well established for the compression of gases and vapors. It has proven its economy and uniqueness in many applications, particularly where large volumes are handled at medium pressures.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Following approach may be used:

  1. Set design points and preform priliminary design calculations
  2. 3D CAD Model  Design (willbe 3-D printed for prototype)
  3. Computational Meshing of the model
  4. Assessment of structural integrity of compressor through Finite Element Modeling (FEM) using ANSYS
  5. Aerodynamic Performance estimates using CFD analysis

Expected Deliverables:

  1. 3D CAD Model
  2. Technical calculations and performance estimates
  3. Detailed structural and CFD analysis report.
